Police in Kalamazoo, Michigan, took into custody a man, 50, who was accused of slamming his pickup truck into a group of bicyclists, killing five and injuring four, but hours later, and they’re still not releasing his name.

It’s also not clear what motivated the collision, and if alcohol was a factor.

The bike riders were hit on a rural road north of Kalamazoo by a 50-year-old man, Kalamazoo County prosecuting attorney Jeff Getting said, at a news conference. The formal charges are expected to be handed down by Thursday, Reuters reported.

Five of the riders were pronounced dead at the scene and four others were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition, as well as the identities of all nine, isn’t yet known.

Local law enforcement reported being on the lookout for the vehicle driven by the man about 30 minutes before the fatal collisions, based in part on citizen complaints of a weaving vehicle on a highway.

“The police were actively looking for the vehicle based on the information that was called into them,” Getting said, Reuters reported.

After the fatal wreck, the driver reportedly attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended shortly after, just a short distance from the scene.
