ELECTION 2016
25% OF FEDERAL EMPLOYEES MAY QUIT IF TRUMP WINS
Billionaire would shrink government without lifting a finger
Douglas Ernst
Donald Trump may be the only candidate in U.S. history who could shrink the size of the federal government simply by swearing in as commander in chief.
A poll of federal employees conducted by Government Business Council Jan. 20-26 found that a Trump victory may result in roughly 25 percent of the government’s workforce quitting.
Advocates of limited government have an extra reason to cheer: A majority of the respondents who would leave are career employees in positions GS-13 and higher.
The website, which is dedicated to federal managers and executives, surveyed 688 federal employees and its results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Other key results in the poll include:
- 59 percent would be embarrassed by a Trump administration.
- 56 percent said they would support President Obama if he wanted to run for a third term.
- 73 percent of Democrats gave Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders a favorable rating.
- 59 percent of all respondents supported Obama’s executive orders on gun control.
- 31 percent identified as Democrats; 42 percent as Republicans; 19 percent declined to answer; 8 percent did not know.
Trump has led his Republican rivals for the 2016 presidential nomination since last August. Monday night’s Iowa caucuses are primed to cement his status as the party’s likely nominee.
“I don’t want to do well; I want to win,” Trump said Monday at a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, CNN reported. “I want to win Iowa. It’s going to send such a great message that we are not going to take it anymore.”
