Obama Says Americans Are Crazy 'Conspiracy' Theorists For Worrying About a Gun Grab. He's Lying.
Ben Shapiro - The Daily wire
President Obama is a confirmed liar. But we’re all conspiracy theorists if we worry that President Obama, who has repeatedly praised Australia’s gun confiscation regime, wants to take our guns, and is pursuing an incremental policy toward doing so.
On Thursday night, at a heavily produced townhall event hosted by official Obama news outlet CNN, Obama complained about “this notion of a conspiracy out there” to confiscate weapons. Anderson Cooper then asked Obama, “Let me just jump in, is it fair to call it a conspiracy? I mean, there’s a lot of people who really believe this deeply – that they just don’t trust you.”
Obama responded as the audience cheered, “I’m sorry, Cooper, yes it is fair to call it a conspiracy. What are you saying? Are you suggesting that the notion that we are creating a plot to take everybody’s guns away so that we can impose martial law?”
Well, no. Nobody is suggesting that Obama will declare martial law. But we are suggesting, based on Obama’s own words, that he would love to use the power of government to disarm the population, and that he will pursue any incremental change toward that end.
Cooper did in fact ask Obama about his “support for Australia’s tough anti-gun policies. They banned semiautomatic rifles,” Cooper continues, “they banned even shotguns in Australia. You praised their policies over and over. Back in 2008, you said – you talked about bitter Americans clinging to their guns.”
Obama’s answer: “I’ve been very good for gun manufacturers.”
Well, then.
The reason Obama’s been great for gun manufacturers is because we have a dying republic, not a dictatorship. But Obama clearly believes that government nudges America toward gradual adoption of his preferred policies. Here’s what Obama’s actually said about Australia’s gun confiscation:
“Couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting, similar to Columbine or Newtown. And Australia just said, well, that’s it, we’re not doing, we’re not seeing that again, and basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws, and they haven’t had a mass shooting since.” – June 11, 2014
And this:
“When Australia had a mass killing – I think it was in Tasmania about 25 years ago -- it was just so shocking to the system, the entire country said, ‘Well, we’re going to completely change our gun laws,’ and they did. And it hasn’t happened since.” – June 22, 2014
And this:
“We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours – Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know there are ways to prevent it.” – October 1, 2015
It is interesting that every time Obama mentions Australia’s gun confiscation, he doesn’t explicitly spell out what it is that they did. That’s because he’d be excoriated for doing so. But he clearly believes that the solution to America’s gun ills lies in confiscation – he’s just dishonest enough to pretend his measures are a final stop rather than incrementalism.
Obama said the same thing about Obamacare. Obama’s critics suggested that Obamacare was the first step on the road toward nationalization of health care, mirroring what Obama himself had said; Obama insisted that wasn’t true.
It was. As Jonathan Gruber made clear, the Obama administration lied over and over to achieve their goals – and they will always lie to achieve their final goals. No, it is not a “conspiracy theory” to take the president at his word. It would violate all principles of basic logic not to do so.
