SANTORUM: ISLAM IS ALSO FORM OF GOVERNMENT
GOP candidate: First Amendment should not protect political element
Paul Bremmer
It is often claimed Islam is a "religion of peace," but during Tuesday's GOP undercard presidential debate, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum boldly declared that Islam is more than just a religion.
"The fact of the matter is Islam is different," Santorum said. "I know this is going to come as a shock to a lot of people, and I mean that sincerely. Islam is not just a religion; it is also a political governing structure. The fact of the matter is Islam is a religion, but it's also Shariah law, it is also a civil government, it is also a form of government."
It is the political aspect of Islam, not the religious aspect, which should concern Americans, according to the senator.
"The idea that that is protected under the First Amendment is wrong, and in fact that political structure is what is the big problem: the imposition of Shariah law and adherence to fundamental Islam as it was practiced in the 7th century, and there has to be a line drawn," he said.
When the moderator gave former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee a chance to respond, he had no quarrel with Santorum's take on Islam.
"I don't disagree with anything that the senator just said, because that's exactly right," Huckabee said.
The debate comes as America is fewer than 50 days away from the first 2015 presidential election season votes.
The word fight in Las Vegas came as billionaire business tycoon Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz were jockeying for the lead.
Going into the CNN debate, Cruz and Trump were locked in a two-man race in Iowa. Cruz was up 31 percent to Trump's 21 percent among likely Republican caucus-goers, according to a Bloomberg Politics-Des Moines Register poll published Saturday. Another Iowa poll conducted Dec. 7-10 by Loras College had Cruz leading Trump by 29.7 percent to 23.4 percent on Tuesday.
But nationally, Cruz is still lagging far behind Trump, who hit a new high of 41 percent in a Monmouth University poll conducted Dec. 10-13. In that poll, Cruz landed at just 14 percent.
In yet another national poll by ABC News and the Washington Post, Trump trounced Cruz by 23 points. Trump's surge came after the GOP front-runner proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. until Congress can get a handle on the issue of terror
