TRUMP WOULD 'ABSOLUTELY' WEIGH 3RD-PARTY RUN
'I'll have to see how I'm being treated by the Republicans'
Donald Trump, billionaire businessman and presidential hopeful, said the Republican National Committee hasn’t treated him well and he’s actually thinking of making a third-party run if those on the entrenched right don’t stop their attacks on him.
“The RNC has not been supportive,” he said, in an interview with the Hill. “They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy. The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”
As such, a run for the White House as a third-party candidate – as Ross Perot did in the 1992 campaign, clearing the way for Bill Clinton to win the election – may be his next move, he said.
When asked directly about that possibility, Trump said: “So many people want me to, if I don’t win. I’ll have to see how I’m being treated by the Republicans. Absolutely, if they’re not fair, that would be a factor.”
RNC chief Reince Priebus had asked Trump a month ago to tone down his rhetoric. Just recently, the group chided him for his negative statements about Sen. John McCain.
“I’m not in the gang,” he said, the Hill reported. “I’m not in the group where the group does whatever it’s supposed to do. I want to do what’s right for the country, not what’s good for special interest groups that contribute, not what’s good for the lobbyists and the donors.”
His comments come as polls put him above other Republican candidates, due in large part to his calls to end illegal immigration. On that note, Trump is due to make an appearance at the border on Thursday to meet with various agents, whom he says support him in his stance on immigration.
