Much has been said about President Barack Hussein Obama’s apparent sympathies for Islam. Some have speculated that Obama is secretly a Muslim, while others suggest he is a secular humanist or atheist, only siding with Islam in order to attack Christianity.

Those suggestions and speculations aren’t just coming from crazy right wing nut jobs either, as commentators in the Middle East have been bringing it up recently, seemingly searching for an acceptable reason to explain the Obama administration’s cozying up to the totalitarian Iranian regime.

Two commentators on different Middle Eastern television networks, translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, both claim that Obama is working to side with Iran because his father from Kenya was a Shiite Muslim.

“Barack Hussein Obama is the son of a Shiite father,” said London-based Iranian opposition activist Abu Muntasir Al-Baloushi. “There is no doubt that he is Iran’s lifesaver. Some people call him the Iranian lobby in America. He suffers from a peculiar complex.”

Syrian writer Muhydin Lazikani said separately, “I am not peddling some theory and I am not being a racist, but Barack Hussein Obama is the son of a Shiite Kenyan father.”

Lazikani incorrectly presumed that Obama spent a portion of his childhood growing up in Mombasa, Kenya, which he also claimed was majority Shiite.

“All the childhood memories of the man who rules the White House are Shiite memories. This is why the Iranian issue is so important to him and why he is so anxious for Iran to emerge victorious and for Syria and all the of the Arab Gulf to be shattered,” Lazikani said.

“He imposed this Shiite expansion on Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Iran and Afghanistan. Any wise enemy of Islam realizes that Shiite expansion is the best method to destroy Islam from within,” Al-Baloushi said.

This isn’t really a new rumor either, as Time magazine did a little bit of looking into it back in 2008 — which means they set out to disprove or dismiss it out of hand to help pave Obama’s way to the White House.

Time explained that Kenya is actually mostly Christian, and that the Muslim minority in the country was mostly of the Sunni variety, although there certainly are some Shiite there.

They also spoke of a somewhat far-fetched theory about Obama being Shiite that is believed to have been started in Iran based on their apocalyptic vision of a great Mahdi coming to save all Muslims, a Mahdi whose coming is presaged by a tall black man who rules in the West (H/T The Blaze).

In truth, the talk of Obama being a Shiite Muslim is likely in response to the wide and growing sentiment in theSunni Arab Gulf States that Obama has abandoned them, America’s traditional allies in the region, in order to more closely embrace Shiite Iran.

Some of this speculation about Obama being Shiite could also stem from the fact that his closest aide, Iranian-born communist Valerie Jarrett, is most likely sympathetic to the Shiites.

Regardless of whether Obama is a Shiite, Sunni or secular atheist, one can simply remove religion from the scenario and observe his actions over the years in the Middle East. That will confirm that Obama has dumped America’s traditional allies, like Israel and the Arab Gulf States, in favor of reaching out to Iran.
