Benjamin Netanyahu: Iran deal endangers 'the peace of the world'
JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave another sharp warning Wednesday about the emerging agreement between six world powers and Iran.
With Secretary of State John Kerry continuing talks in Switzerland aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program, Netanyahu said “the concessions offered to Iran in Lausanne would ensure a bad deal that would endanger Israel, the Middle East and the peace of the world.”
The statement, just two minutes long, came ahead of House Speaker John Boehner’s visit with the newly reelected Israeli premier. Boehner, who has also been critical of the possible Iran deal, is here with an all-Republican delegation for a meeting with Netanyahu.
Netanyahu spelled out his opposition to the Iran talks in more detail in his recent address to Congress in Washington. That speech, orchestrated by Boehner, widened a rift between Netanyahu and the Obama administration, which has been openly critical of the Israeli prime minister’s election tactics and has vowed to reassess aspects of the U.S.-Israeli relationship.
“Now is the time for the international community to insist on a better deal,” Netanyahu said Wednesday. “A better deal would significantly roll back Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
A better deal would link the lifting of the restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programs to a change in Iran’s behavior.
Iran must stop its aggression in the region, stop its terrorism throughout the world and stop its threats to annihilate Israel. That should be non-negotiable and that’s the deal that the world powers must insist on.”
