FAITH UNDER FIRE
BEWARE! WORLD'S 'ROAD TO DAMASCUS' MOMENT IS COMING
Exclusive: Craige McMillan tells of 'permanent end to rebellion against Lord'
Sometime after the world’s first Easter, the Apostle Paul was put on trial for his faith. Saul, before he became Paul, was known in Jewish circles as a Pharisee’s Pharisee. He not only knew Jewish law very well – he kept Jewish law very well. And at that particular moment, he was hell-bent on imprisoning, torturing and killing Christians.
But a funny thing happened to Saul during his travels along the road to Damascus, where more Christians were due to be slaughtered. He met the resurrected Jesus.
It was a straightforward meeting. In the midst of the blinding light of Jesus’ presence, with Saul’s face pushed down into the dirt of the Damascus road and Jesus’ foot on his neck, Saul had what the world today jokingly refers to as a “come to Jesus” moment.
He did. The world that then was never recovered. Saul became the Apostle Paul. He evangelized much of the ancient world and recorded his change of heart – and the reasons why – in what became the New Testament.
The religious authorities of Paul’s day – much like the irreligious authorities of our day – weren’t keen on intellectual competition. Both then and now they find it much easier to intimidate, threaten and ultimately kill those they disagree with.
Sometime after the Damascus road, Paul found himself on trial with King Agrippa, the last king in the Herodian line, basically a Roman governor installed to keep the Jews in line. Paul spoke in his own defense, relating his background and credentials. He concluded his defense with this observation:
“For the life of me, I can’t see why it’s a criminal offense to believe that God raises the dead” (Acts 26:8 MSG).
The response today by the enemies of Easter is pretty much the same, isn’t it? Criminalize belief. Intimidate, threaten and ultimately kill – if necessary through functionaries – those who refuse to bow their knee and extol the virtues of the world’s godless culture, and who just can’t seem to accept the promise of technological salvation from death in lieu of eternity with God.
Just like Saul on the road to Damascus, the world today seems to be running, hell-bent with arms wide open, down a dusty road toward a destiny where angels fear to tread. This world, with its technological prowess, expects a repeat of the crucifixion.
What they are going to get, however, is another “road to Damascus” moment, with the Creator’s foot on their neck, their face in the dirt and a permanent end to their rebellion against the Lord’s exclusive franchise over heaven and earth.
