BOEHNER ON IRAN: 'DEAL WITH DEVIL' DEMANDS OVERSIGHT
Obama concedes Congress can OK final nuclear pact

A bill giving Congress the ability to turn down any White House deal with Iran on nuclear development is moving rapidly through both the House and Senate, leaving President Obama in the humbling spot of having to work with legislators, rather than by himself.
The Obama administration has been resisting congressional input on the looming nuclear pact with Tehran for months, saying such would only slow and hamper negotiations. But even key Democrats have criticized the executive bypass, and members of both parties have expressed alarm the deal that’s been making the public waves isn’t beneficial to America’s interests – and is possibly downright dangerous to Israel. Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez in particular has accused the White House of taking talking points straight from Tehran in the forging of the deal.
Now, a bill moving through Congress would force Obama to take congressional advice and possibly consent with the deal.
As House Speaker John Boehner put it, the Associated Press reported: “I don’t know how you cut a deal with the devil and think the devil is going to keep his end of the deal.”
Obama, through spokesman Josh Earnest, indicated he would sign the compromise legislation, which has already been unanimously approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“I have always supported congressional review of any final agreement with Iran,” said the ranking Democrat on the committee, Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, in the AP report. “If a final agreement with Iran is received in a timely manner, Congress will have 30 calendar days for an orderly and thoughtful review.
If an agreement with Iran goes into effect, then this bill ensures an ongoing oversight role for Congress and provides for expedited procedures to snap back sanctions if Iran breaches the agreement.”
Cardin also agreed with Boehner on one key point: “There is not trust when it comes to Iran,” he said, AP reported.
The bill will probably go to the full Senate in a week, and clear the House around the same time. Players in the Iranian nuclear deal hope to solidify the agreement by June 30.
