“War-torn Africa” is a phrase heard so often that many people have become immune to it, to the atrocities committed everyday to other human beings over there.
But no matter how desensitized you’ve become, how could you not feel a tug on your heart when you hear of these terrible things happening to children?
The Times of Israel reported that at least 89 boys had been captured in Kampala, Uganda on Saturday by a Sudanese armed group of militants. Witnesses told UNICEF officials that the militants had surrounded the town and searched each and every house, taking any boys older than 12 by force.
UNICEF representative to South Sudan, Jonathan Veitch, had this to say in a statement:
“The recruitment and use of children by armed forces destroys families and communities. Children are exposed to incomprehensible levels of violence, they lose their families and their chance to go to school.”
Though highly illegal, it is believed the boys will be forced to kill and fight, becoming militants just like their kidnappers.
