GOV'T GIVES TIPS ON ENSURING BABIES ARE DEAD
'They very graphically and meticulously described exactly what you do to kill this child'
Garth Kant
WASHINGTON – Reggie Littlejohn positively glows, perhaps with the radiance of someone whose life has purpose and fulfillment.
The woman with the boy’s name is on a mission to save the girls of China.
As she sat down at the Heritage Foundation on Thursday, WND asked what was the most shocking thing she had encountered in her journey as the world’s leading opponent of forced abortions and sterilizations.
That was easy.
“Best practices – infanticide,” she replied without hesitation.
She described her horror while reading an email train on the official website of the Chinese Communist Party for obstetricians and gynecologists, discussing how best to kill infants born alive during late-term abortions.
“It was a very frank discussion. I mean, I can tell you the procedures they used to make sure that baby is born dead,” said Littlejohn, but did not go into the gruesome details, which readers can learn for themselves by clicking on the link above.
An attorney herself, she said it was a problem for abortionists because, “If it is born alive, it has the rights of a child. So this is how you make sure it is born dead.”
That meant the Chinese government implicitly recognized it was killing children, because, “If it (a child) had come out one minute later and alive, it would have had rights. And so they very graphically and meticulously, in medical language, described exactly what you do to kill this child so it will never see the light of day. That was shocking to me.”
The numbers are shocking, too.
According to her organization, Women’s Rights Without Frontiers:
- The Chinese government actually boasts it has “prevented” 400 million lives since the inception of its One-Child policy 34 years ago.
- 200 million fewer women are alive today due to gendercide: sex-selection abortions, abandonment or deadly neglect of baby girls just because they are female.
- There are 37 million more men than women in China, where the birth ratio of boys to girls is most skewed in the word: 118 boys for every 100 girls in 2010.
- 590 Chinese women commit suicide every day.
- China has the highest female suicide rate in the world and is the only country where the rate of female suicides exceeds those of men.
- Abortions are devastating China’s future: demographers predict China will grow old before it grows rich.
Littlejohn is the founder and president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, the leading voice to end forced abortion and forced sterilizations in China. She and her husband, a pastor in San Jose, California, sold their home to fund the organization.
Littlejohn said fundraising is huge for the organization because it is very small, “But for our size, we have enormous impact.”
In the mid-1990s, the attorney learned of the problem she has since devoted her life to, while representing a Chinese woman in an asylum case who had been forcibly sterilized.
Also since then, Littlejohn led the campaign to free Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng, the renowned blind activist and self-taught lawyer who was imprisoned and tortured in China for his advocacy of human rights.
She has testified before Congress six times and has briefed the White House and the State Department, and spoken to numerous European parliaments.
Littlejohn was in Washington on Thursday to appear on a Heritage Foundation panel with Chen and Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J, who she said had done more for the advancement of human rights in China than any other elected official.
She described Women’s Rights Without Frontiers as an international coalition to combat forced abortions, sex-selective abortions and sexual slavery in China, with hopes to branch out into India.
Littlejohn told WND the One-Child policy is enforced in a very uneven and arbitrary manner in China. A woman with an illegal pregnancy, one without a birth permit, can still give birth by paying a fine in places where officials have not met their quota of abortions. Other mothers are forced to have abortions.
Does that amount to a form of state-sanctioned bribery?
“You could say that,” explained Littlejohn, because the One-Child policy generates “a huge amount of money” for Chinese Communist Party officials.
A fine for a pregnancy without a birth permit can be 10 times a person’s annual salary. Since most can’t pay, most end up with forced abortions.
“This is the hallmark of communist regimes: peace-time murders of their own citizens,” Littlejohn observed somberly.
Had she seen any improvement?
Communist China sporadically pretends to ease its forced abortion and sterilization policy, she said, but characterized the changes as mere cosmetic tweaks designed to dupe a gullible Western media. Her short answer? “No.”
WND asked if Vice President Joe Biden’s remark that he understood and did not second guess China’s One-Child policy had hurt her efforts.
“It actually helped our efforts. When he made that comment there was such an explosion of outrage from everyone that all the presidential candidates were almost stumbling over each other to see who could condemn him the worst.”
She noted the White House even backtracked by “clarifying” his comments, “which was really a retraction.”
“And I found that very heartening because, if somebody had [said] something like that five years before, when our efforts had not really gotten off the ground, it would have gone by unnoticed. So, the level of reaction against it is something I found very heartening.”
How do ordinary Chinese people feel about the One-Child policy?
Littlejohn thinks there is a division of opinion within the people and the government itself.
“I think there are many in the government who would like to see this end, even just for demographic reasons. The One-Child policy is driving gendercide, the sex-selection abortion of baby girls, which, in turn is driving human trafficking and sexual slavery,” because of a shortage of women.
The other problem she said the policy is causing China is they no longer have enough young people to support a rapidly aging majority of citizens. They are running out of time in the race to grow rich before they grow too old.
What can ordinary people do to help end forced abortions?
“We have a campaign called ‘Save a girl.’”
It involves a network of field workers on the ground in China and contacts in the community, “so we know if a woman has had an ultrasound and if she’s carrying a girl.”
The contacts also know if she plans to abort her baby, or plans to abandon a girl she’s given birth to, “or is suffering from such horrible poverty the life of her daughter is threatened.”
“We’ll go to her door, say please do not abort or abandon your baby because she is a girl. She’s a precious daughter and we will give you a monthly stipend for a year to empower you to keep this daughter.”
Littlejohn said they have had a tremendous success rate, saving more than 100 baby girls already.
“This is a way people can help. Go on our website, click on the campaign and contribute. And that will help save lives in China.”
WND asked, you can’t get into China yourself, can you?
“No. Everything I’ve talked about in this interview would be considered a state secret in China. They don’t acknowledge that they forcibly abort children.”
Littlejohn said she would “get in the same kind of trouble” as Chen, who was imprisoned, tortured and denied medial treatment.
“It would be very foolish for me to go to China at this time.”
