It was in the fall of 1980 that I met with Isser Harel, the former head of the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad. He handed me a cup of hot tea and a plate of cookies. I asked him, “Do you think terrorism will come to America, and if so, where and why?”
Harel replied, “I fear it will come to you in America. America has the power, but not the will to fight terrorism. The terrorists have the will, but not the power to fight America, but all that could change with time. Arab oil money buys more than tents.”
He continued, “New York City is the symbol of freedom and capitalism. It's likely they will strike the Empire State Building, your tallest building [the World Trade Center had opened just a couple of years before, and he didn't remember those buildings were taller] and a symbol of your power.”
With my Western mindset, I replied that America was dedicated to fighting terrorism. Harel smiled and said, “You kill a fly, and you celebrate. We live with flies daily. One dies and 100 flies come to the funeral.”
Of course, we all remember 9/11, when Harel's prediction sadly came true. And though most people in our country have gone back to their normal lives and put the threat of terrorism out of their minds, nothing has changed.
There are still evil men dedicated to our destruction who will stop at nothing to kill or injure us in any way they can. America is still the target, and this threat is one of the reasons that it is so critically important that we stand with Israel. When we defend Israel, God will defend us. Today, you and I have an opportunity to do something vitally important to the future of the Jewish state.
