1 Peter Devotional #6
Dale Buchanan
“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” (! Peter 1:13 KJV).
Both men and women wore a tunic in the first century, similar to a long shirt or a nightgown today.
If left loose to flap, it would impede action.
A busy person would wear a girdle around the waist or loin to hold the garment in place.
You would “gird up” for action.
This passage uses the term metaphorically to gird up the loins of your mind.
Be mentally and morally alert.
You’re a Christian, and you are sure of it.
The Christian walk is not easy.
Therefore, be mentally and emotionally prepared to live for the Lord.
You have a new hope laid up for you in heaven. (Colossians 1:5). We are looking forward to Jesus’ coming.
Titus 2:11-14 talks about His coming as the “blessed hope” of the believer.
Jesus gave Himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto himself a peculiar people zealous of good works.
We anticipate the grace we will receive at the coming of Jesus Christ. “We know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (I John 3:2b-3).
Now is the time to “gird up.”
