“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord: you know that I love you.'” John 21:15 (ESV)
When we buy a piece of furniture, we have a choice: either a prefabricated article from a supermarket, or a genuine well-crafted piece from a specialised store.
Generally, we want a reliable article that will hold up for years under the duress of constant use and if we have children, possibly abuse!
Jesus challenged Peter's reliability, by asking him about the genuineness of his love.
How do we know if we are genuine Christians who truly love the Lord?
Jesus reminded His disciples in John 14:15 that “if you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
The proof of love for Christ is not an oral confession but living obedience.
Peter confessed his love three times for Jesus and so as an expression of this love, Jesus asked for him to obey the command to 'feed my sheep.'
Scripture is resplendent with Jesus' commandments.
If we truly love Him, we will obey them.
If anyone says that he or she loves God but does not endeavour to obey His commandments they are a liar and the love of God is not in them
(1 John 4:20).
Like a poor version of a piece of furniture, they will not stand up under the pressure of trials and testing's that come in this life.
Only those who obey Jesus truly love Him.
How do we stand up?
Are we the genuine article? Yes or No?
There is no room for indecision or uncertainty with God.
