“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni,’ which means Teacher.” John 20:16 NAB
Mary recognized Jesus by His voice.
In the garden, she was close enough to hear Him call her name.
She had left all the disciples behind; genuine love and devotion set her out on the journey toward Jesus that morning.
He was waiting, for He heard the call of her heart long before she arrived.
At the Transfiguration, our Father’s voice bellowed through the clouds: “This is My chosen Son; listen to Him.” (Luke 9:35) Very clear direction—God wants us listening to Jesus! How do we plug in to that divine communication?
First, it’s all about relationship. To hear, we must belong to the Shepherd. We must declare as David did—the Lord is my Shepherd! (Psalm 23:1) When we are born again into that new relationship, we become a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that includes a new set of ears tuned to the frequency of His voice.
Jesus affirms that, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
Secondly, proximity is essential. Mary Magdalene ran to the place where she knew Jesus would be. There must be an eager pursuit. A desire to seek Him. A follow through of drawing near. (James 4:8) We must cultivate the climate to tune into the frequency of His voice. When we draw near, He will inevitably appear.
Lastly, it requires attentiveness…in quiet morning prayer, the stillness of an empty church, the comfort of a friend’s voice, surprising messages within music or upon billboards, and certainly, the striking revelation of His Word.
Jesus hears the call of your heart; He is waiting to speak. Heed the Father’s eternal admonition: “This is My chosen Son; listen to Him.”
