God At Work – Anne Adams
“But He answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.’” (John 5:17 NASB)
The story goes that many years ago a popular professor at a small college had become so frail he could not live alone.
Since he was anxious to continue teaching, the college and his friends found a solution.
They created an apartment for him on the top floor of the main building where he could get to his classes by elevator.
He also had frequent visitors to check on him and see to his needs.
He was quite content in this situation.
However, there were some students who were still concerned.
They asked: “Aren’t you lonely up there?”
The professor smiled and cocked his head.
“Not really,” he replied.
“My only neighbor above me is God.
He’s busy but he’s quiet.”
Like Jesus says in our passage, God is certainly at work in the world, and in our lives—but often it’s only when we’re not looking for it.
As the professor in our story put it, the Lord is certainly busy but he’s also quiet.
One way this may happen is when we see how he works when he guides us into new areas of service for him or gives us opportunities to grow spiritually.
It might work like this—perhaps he introduces us to a particular person who needs our encouragement or support.
Or, we might have a struggle or other event in our life that helps us learn to trust him and his provision.
Then what often occurs is that he works so quietly, we don’t recognize his presence until we look back and see his perfect planning.
Indeed, God is at work in our lives, and always for our benefit and His glory.
