God Determines what is Essential

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 RSV
In context here, Paul is speaking about dietary matters of the conscience from the old law.
But the truth of the matter is, this biblical passage can be applied to anything that might be a stumbling block for our conscience or a temptation from the enemy.
Not all things are helpful or buildup.
What might be all the rage in the world today, maybe the latest fall wardrobe or a bigger home, may actually be a temptation that will lead to trouble and not at all essential in God's eyes for us at this time.
Our culture today, believers included, often focus on impressing others instead of using God's wisdom for our decisions.
I remember so well a statement spoken from a former pastor; “Never try to keep up with the Joneses’, they’ll only go out and refinance!”
As a believer, we are challenged for our own good to ‘not be conformed to this world.’
We’re mandated to commit and dedicate who we are, and what we are about, to our Lord’s preeminence.
We need to remember to not rush into things before we seek God's guidance.
All of His wisdom is at our disposal if we seek and believe.
Learning to seek God first and to dedicate each new day to the Lord, grants us His wisdom to discern what is God-honoring and for our very best.
Having raised a family of five children, my wife gave up her teaching career to remain at home.
As we committed to tithing, God revealed to us what things were really essential and of value, over trying to keep up with Joneses.
Doing the exact opposite of what our flesh wanted to do, we learned that giving to God's purposes built us up and blessed us in more ways than you can imagine.
You can trust that God always knows what is essential and best for us.
