Those Fancy Restaurants
Ken Ebright
"Don't store treasures for yourselves here on earth where moths and rust will destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them. But store your treasures in heaven where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust and where thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your treasure is.” Matthew 6:19-21 (NCV)
There is a popular area in my town, filled with fancy restaurants.
I don’t have a lot of money, and live paycheck to paycheck.
Sometimes, I wish I could go out and eat at nicer places.
Maybe even take a date or friend to dinner.
I have thought about it, but when I looked at their menu, there is no way I can go based on my salary.
I am happy for those who do get to enjoy going there.
I am also thankful, God has blessed me because the company I work for has ordered lunch for us from a fancy pizza place in the area.
I will admit, there have been times where I felt sad or jealous about not going to nicer places or having more beautiful things.
I remind myself that while expensive things might make me happy for a moment, it won't last, especially food.
I have learned to overcome those negative feelings by keeping my focus on the absolute promises of God.
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus tells us not to store our treasures here on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and thieves can steal.
He tells us to build and store our treasure in heaven, so our hearts will be there, and our treasure will be waiting for us when we get to heaven.
So, even though I cannot afford a fancy dinner and finer things, when I can, I support a missionary in a foreign country, bringing eternal life to the lost.
With our money, God says we are going to be very thankful if we value the things of Jesus and build our treasure in heaven.
