Whom the Son Sets Free
Jennifer Woodley
‘For freedom Christ has set us free, stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.’ Galatians 5:1 (NRSV)
Freedom is a triad of three beautiful stars called Spirit, Grace, and Faith.
They are a constellation that is not burdensome, but light to carry.
When these bright stars are shining in our lives, they dispel the darkness of the flesh, the law and works, setting us free from their enslaving yokes.
A dependency on the flesh, the law and human works, is a contrary gospel that is a dark weighty bondage, inhibiting us from walking lightly and freely with Jesus.
How quickly we fall back into the bondage of our past!
We are to live according to the leading of the Spirit rather than our fleshly desires, accepting the grace of God’s gift in Jesus Christ rather than following suffocating laws.
We faithfully believe that Christ’s work is enough rather than working to become righteous in God’s sight.
Let’s consider where this triad of three shining stars has been extinguished in our lives.
Where are we coming under the expectations of man-made laws that cause us to say, I should do and I must follow?
Where are we being drawn by our fleshly desires that seek to weigh us down and promote self-indulgence?
Where are we depending upon actions as a means of justification, that might satisfy us, but not please God?
What might God be saying to us as we to turn back to these weak elements that keep us in bondage?
‘Father, please open my eyes so that I might see where I am not living freely in you. Thank you.’
