U.S. INTEL WARNS OF POSSIBLE PRE-ELECTION TERROR ATTACKS IN U.S.
3 states named as potential targets
U.S. intelligence officials are warning al-Qaida may be planning terror attacks in three states on Monday, the eve of Election Day, CBS News reported Friday.
“It is believed New York, Texas and Virginia are all possible targets, though no specific locations are mentioned,” reported CBS.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio learned several days ago New York was among the reported targets. The mayor, speaking Friday on his weekly radio show, said law enforcement officials were still evaluating the information to determine its credibility.
“We are still very much assessing the credibility,” said de Blasio. “It is not at all clear how credible this is. We are watching carefully.”
Counterterrorism officials were alerted to the threat out of an “abundance of caution.”
“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States,” a senior FBI official told CBS News.
“The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety,” the official said.
Intelligence about possible threats always spikes ahead of major events and during holiday seasons.
