BEN CARSON SLAMMED FOR PRO-GUN VIEWS

Ex-neurosurgeon says killings don't justify loss of rights

Retired neurosurgeon and rising presidential candidate Ben Carson is back in the eyes of an outraged mainstream media again after responding to the Roseburg, Oregon, mass shootings by saying such killings don’t justify wiping out gun rights and then remarking in a very public way on Fox News that had he been under similar attack, he would have thrown his body in the line of fire.

“I would not just stand there and let him shoot me,” Carson said, during a recent “Fox & Friends” interview. “I would say: ‘Hey, guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.”

Those comments came after Carson took to a Facebook question-and-answer session which included his mention of two cousins killed in street violence, and his own personal physician experiences of dealing with gunshot victims. But his takeaway wasn’t to crack down on gun rights.

Rather, he said this: “I never saw a body with bullet holes that was more devastating than taking the right to arm ourselves away.”

And, as the New York Times pointed, Carson also just told the national media his idea of preventing future gun violence was aligned with the National Rifle Association’s – arm more “good guys,” and provide firearms training for key school officials, including kindergarten teachers.

“If the teacher was trained in the use of that weapon and had access to it, I would be much more comfortable if they had one than if they didn’t,” he said, to USA Today.

It didn’t take long for his detractors to pounce.

“Ben Carson’s offensive response is the same as Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and the rest of the Republican field whose answer on what the government should do to protect children from gun violence is simple – do nothing,” said Jessica Mackler, president of the liberal political action committee, American Bridge 21st Century, the New York Times reported.

And T.J. Helmstetter, a Democratic National Committee spokesman, said: “It’s not brain surgery. Fewer guns in the wrong hands equal fewer deaths from gun violence. Ben Carson should stick to what he knows.”

Meanwhile, GOP front-runner Donald Trump came out in support of Carson, saying in a tweeted message: “Ben Carson was speaking in general terms as to what he would do if confronted with a gunman, and was not criticizing the victims. Not fair!”
