HOLLYWOOD'S HUGE IMPACT ON MARRIAGE RULING

Exclusive: Ted Baehr explains how TV softened Americans to homosexuality

Hollywood has had a huge impact on last week’s Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex civil marriage for all 50 states.

If you want to understand Hollywood’s impact, it helps to take a brief look at history.

Between the 1930s and 1960s, the entertainment industry in Hollywood refrained to a large degree from movies that included references to premarital sex, sexual promiscuity, adultery, prostitution and homosexuality. In the 1950s, a few movies began to include more references to premarital sex. This trend began to increase even more in the 1960s, with the James Bond craze and movies like 1963′s “Love with the Proper Stranger.” Hollywood tried to broach the subject of homosexuality with the 1970s movie “Boys in the Band,” but it was TV that actually led the way with the 1972 movie “That Certain Summer” and 1970s programs like the 1973 reality show “An American Family” and ABC’s “Soap,” which featured a gay character played by Billy Crystal.

However, it was the 1990s sitcom “Will & Grace” about a homosexual man living with a straight woman that seemed to have a real effect on the culture. Even Vice President Joe Biden said, “I think ‘Will & Grace’ probably did more to educate the American public [about homosexuality] than almost anything anybody’s ever done so far.”

Then, on Sept. 23, 2009, Fox TV began airing the program “Modern Family” where a male homosexual couple adopted a baby and then officially got married.

Is it any wonder, then, that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage?

After all, just a few years ago, Democratic politicians like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton said they were opposed to making same-sex marriage the law of the land.

What a difference a few years make!

Hollywood is the entertainment capital of the world. As such, it creates and controls the culture that teaches the children, informs the public and helps elect the politicians who hire the teachers and appoint the Supreme Court justices.

Everywhere you turn, it seems, Hollywood, the mass media and famous celebrities are promoting policies such as the re-definition of marriage and family.

Is it any wonder, then, that out-of-wedlock births have been increasing dramatically for the last 50 years, ever since Hollywood abandoned the Production Code in favor of making movies with graphic sex and violence?

Despite this, Hollywood makes most of its money from relatively family-friendly movies with no graphic sex or violence, including superhero action movies and animated fare. In fact, statistics show that, because of very popular family-marketed movies like “Frozen,” “Hero 6,” “The Lego Movie,” “Maleficent” and “Heaven is for Real,” movies with no foul language make the most money per movie!

Recently, a series of faith-friendly movies and television programs have made the headlines because of their unexpected popularity and financial success.

For example, the season premiere of “Duck Dynasty” Wednesday night won its night on Cable TV, despite the fact that the program has been running for several years and the novelty may have worn off.

According to an April survey by Rasmussen, 67 percent of Americans believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died for our sins. Also, according to a December survey by Gallup, 41 percent of Americans, or at least 131 million people, attend church nearly weekly.

Because of these numbers, more studio and network heads are expressing interest in faith-friendly and faith-based entertainment.

When I speak across the country and around the world, I often mention that I don’t have a crystal ball – so I can’t predict what the future will hold for family or faith-based entertainment.

The fact remains, however, that the Christian religion and family have always been a strong part of America’s culture, if not a leading part.

So, Hollywood needs to keep that in mind as it plans its movies, television and digital programming in the coming years. To reach the vast number those who go to church or synagogue each week, it needs to show positive depictions of faith and values.

The good news is that there are more and more movies and TV programs about Jesus and more entertainment showing positive depictions of Christian faith, even if it’s only one scene! So, in spite of the other issues, for people of faith and values, God is moving in miraculous ways, no matter what mere mortals believe.

The only concern for Hollywood is that, as the opinions of people shift, and as more court rulings come and go, America (and Hollywood) will lose its commitment to freedom of speech and religious liberty. Then, the entertainment industry will be impoverished by the federal government’s restrictions on speech, especially in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision.

Without freedom of speech and religious liberty, America will cease to be the America that produced the greatest entertainment in the world.
