Listening to presidential candidates boast that they will make America great with carpet bombing, immigration bans and torture brought to mind Will Roger’s wry observation:
“If we ever pass out as a great nation we ought to put on our tombstone ‘America died from a delusion that she had moral leadership.' ”
With the blessing of many “evangelical” pulpits, the heart of the Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount has been surgically removed.
"Love your enemies” is rewritten to read "kill your enemies" and "Blessed are the peacemakers” means we are called to bomb others into oblivion. This is a script that makes munition manufacturers rich and results in perpetual war.
It would be an interesting exercise for presidential candidates to stroll through the Peace Garden in Cowles Commons and to record their comments as they read the bench quotes by Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, Chief Seattle, etc.
Meanwhile the clock of atomic scientists reads three minutes to Doomsday.
