(Associated Press) Republican legislation letting states deny federal family planning money to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers squeezed narrowly through the Senate Thursday, rescued by an ailing GOP senator who returned to the Capitol after back surgery and a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Mike Pence.

In Congress’ latest clash mixing the politics of abortion, women’s health and states’ rights, Pence cast the decisive vote in a 51-50 roll call. The tally had been tied after two GOP senators, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski and Maine’s Susan Collins, joined Democrats opposing the measure.

REFUGEE ARRIVALS TO SKYROCKET UNDER NEW TRUMP PLAN

Court order paves way to more than double the influx

The U.S. State Department is ramping up refugee admissions back to more normal levels after it had slowed to a trickle over the past month under President Donald Trump.

WND has confirmed through a State Department spokesperson that the administration is set to more than double the number of refugees arriving in U.S. cities from the current 400 per week to 900 per week.

On March 15 a federal judge, Derrick Watson in Hawaii, issued a nationwide injunction stopping the State Department from enforcing or implementing sections 2 and 6 of President Trump’s March 6 executive order. Section 6[b] lowers the cap on refugee arrivals to 50,000, down from the 110,000 level set by President Obama.

After the court’s ruling, which was upheld Wednesday by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the cap reverts back to the Obama level of 110,000.

Consequently, the State Department continues to accept refugees and this includes scheduling travel for refugees who have been screened and are otherwise approved for travel.

“The Court Order issued on March 15 prohibits the enforcement or implementation of Section 6 of the EO,” the State Department spokesperson told WND. “Section 6 of the EO includes a cap on refugee admissions into the United States of 50,000 for FY 2017. In accordance with the Court Order, and consistent with both our operational capacity and our capacity under available funding, we have increased the current pace of refugee arrivals to approximately 900 individuals per week. ”

Halfway through the fiscal year, the U.S. has already taken in 39,082 refugees, according to the State Department’s Refugee Processing Center database.

If the 900 per week number holds through the remainder of the fiscal year it would mean the Trump administration would bring in 62,482 refugees for fiscal 2017, which ends on Sept. 30.

While far lower than the 110,000 that Obama had wanted for this year, the 62,482 is not a historically low number. In fact, it’s just barely under the per-year average of 64,000 since 2002.

“As we have said repeatedly, Trump’s refugee admissions are not at the mercy of two rogue judges,” said longtime refugee watchdog Ann Corcoran in her blog post Thursday at Refugee Resettlement Watch. “He can bring in any number under the CEILING set either by Obama (110,000) or his reduced ceiling (50,000).”

Corcoran said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has still not chosen a political appointment to head up the key position that runs refugee resettlement program. That position is deputy assistant-secretary of state for Population, Refugees and Migration. So the program continues to be run by entrenched federal bureaucrats with close ties to the nine federal resettlement agencies.

As Corcoran points out, Trump’s new target number of 62,480 refugees for 2017 falls right in line with annual totals brought in by President George W. Bush and even several years under the Obama administration.

In Fact, the Bush Administration was below the Trump target number in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Even Obama was below that number in 2011 and 2012! (see here).

James Simpson, an economist and author who has written extensively about refugee resettlement, told WND that there are two sides to the Trump administration that appear to be in conflict with each other.

“The establishment side has been poorly serving the president with misinformation about refugees and with misinformation about the House Freedom Caucus, which saved him from the disaster of passing Paul Ryan’s version of Obamacare,” Simpson said.

Trump’s March 6 executive order called for a 120-day pause in all refugee resettlement until additional vetting procedures could be created and implemented. A 90-day ban on visa travel from six predominantly Muslim countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Sudan, Yemen — was also included in the order.

Just under half of the 84,994 refugees who entered the U.S. in fiscal 2016 were Muslim, coming from Somalia, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burma, Uzbekistan and other countries.

At least 95 percent of the refugees sent to the U.S. are selected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They are initially screened by the U.N. and then screened further by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the FBI and other agencies.

They are then sent to more than 300 U.S. cities and towns by the State Department, which contracts with nine private nonprofit agencies including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Church World Service, World Relief, Episcopal Immigration and Migration Ministries, the Hebrew immigrant Aid Society, the International Rescue Committee and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

FBI Director James Comey testified before Congress in 2015 that refugees from broken states, specifically Syria, were virtually impossible to vet because the U.S. has no access to law enforcement data in Syria. The same principle could be applied to Somalia. Syria, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan account for the vast majority of Muslim refugees sent to the U.S.

Several states such as Texas and Tennessee have pulled out of the federal refugee program but the U.S. government continues to send them refugees. Tennessee has filed a lawsuit against the federal government claiming the continuation of the resettlements is a violation of the 10th Amendment.

'Shocked' by millennials who would have put Hillary in Oval Office

Dr. James Dobson, who founded Focus on the Family and now delivers his Christian and pro-family advice through Family Talk, is once again encouraging parents to withdraw their children from public schools.

At least partly because he’s “shocked” at the values, or lack thereof, exhibited by the millennial generation of young people, who are about ages 18-34.

Trained as a teacher and psychologist, early in his career he was largely unaware of homeschooling, he explained on a recent series of  broadcasts featuring guest E. Ray Moore of the Exodus Mandate, which encourages Christian parents to homeschool their children or put them in church-run Christian schools.

Dobson recalled when he came to realize that the biblical mandate for parents to “train up a child in the way he should go” was a call for Christian parents to instruct their children at home or put them in Christian schools that would teach morality.

“It was like putting a match to gasoline [for me],” he said in the conversation with Moore “I got it. I saw it.”

That was more than three decades ago, and Moore credited Dobson’s promotion then with a surge in homeschooling across the nation.

Now, Dobson said, there’s even more need for it, pointing to Moore’s research.

Moore cited the work of Dan Smith from the Nehemiah Institute who found that had only millennials voted in the 2016 presidential race, the results would have been 504 Electoral College votes for Hillary Clinton and 23 for Donald Trump.

Republicans would have carried only five states, Moore said.

“That shocked me,” Dobson said, noting the far-left agenda pursued by Clinton along with her scandals.

Dobson warned that Christians are losing the next generation.

“They been propagandized and given a philosophy that in many cases is contrary to Scripture and what we believe,” he said.

And it’s largely because of the anti-Christian influences of public schools, attended by many impressionable and unprepared Christian children for six hours a day, 180 days a year for 12 or 13 formative years.

They’re exposed to LGBT teachings, evolution, a revisionist form of American history, Islam and worse.

Moore, a retired military chaplain, now is president of Frontline Ministries Inc. and the director of the Exodus Mandate Project. He recalled being one of the pioneers of homeschooling in America.

His four children now are all adult, with their own successful families and careers.

“There’s a scriptural pattern,” Moore explained. “The Bible’s clear the Scripture assigns the education of children to the family with assistance from the church, not the government.”

Even very young children are mean to each other in public school settings, he said, and many aren’t equipped to handle it.

Moore described the 2016 election as a “reprieve” for Christians, who now have time to correct the agenda of churches to include homeschool or Christian schools.

“If we don’t change the way we do education,” he said, “we’ll lose the country. I’m 73 and those coming behind us do not agree with their own parents.”

Moore said the Bible commands children to be raised in the Lord, and public schools in many ways are overtly hostile to faith. But 80 percent of evangelicals still subject their children to public school classrooms.

Dobson, who has been described by the New York Times as “the nation’s most influential evangelical leader,” warned that schools today are even very different than they were a few years back.

“We believe you can make a case with data that the main reason the culture and the next generation are turning away from traditional values, from the Gospel, from Christianity, is primarily because of the indoctrination of the public-school system,” Moore said.

Dobson and Moore noted that even Jesus was homeschooled until he was 12 years old.

Venezuela Muzzles Legislature, Moving Closer to One-Man Rule

IQUITOS, Peru — Venezuela took its strongest step yet toward one-man rule under the leftist President Nicolás Maduro as his loyalists on the Supreme Court seized power from the National Assembly in a ruling late Wednesday night.

The ruling effectively dissolved the elected legislature, which is led by Mr. Maduro’s opponents, and allows the court to write laws itself, experts said.

The move caps a year in which the last vestiges of Venezuela’s democracy have been torn down, critics and regional leaders say, leaving what many now describe as not just an authoritarian regime, but an outright dictatorship.

“What we have warned of has finally come to pass,” said Luis Almagro, the head of the Organization of American States, a regional diplomacy group that includes Venezuela and is investigating the country for violating the bloc’s Democratic Charter.Mr. Almagro called the move a “self-inflicted coup,” a term used in Latin America to denote takeovers typical of the 1990s in Guatemala and Peru — but virtually unheard-of in the region today.

Recent months have seen a swift consolidation of power by Mr. Maduro as scores of political prisoners have been detained without trial, protesters violently repressed and local elections postponed. In taking power from the National Assembly, the ruling removed what most consider to be the only remaining counterbalance to the president’s growing power in the country.

The court said that lawmakers were “in a situation of contempt,” and that while that lasted, the justices themselves would step in to “ensure that parliamentary powers were exercised directly by this chamber, or by the body that the chamber chooses.” It did not say whether it might hand power back.

Members of the National Assembly denounced the ruling on Thursday.

“They have kidnapped the Constitution, they have kidnapped our rights, they have kidnapped our liberty,” said Julio Borges, the opposition lawmaker who heads the body, holding a crumpled copy of the ruling before reporters on Thursday.

Oneida Guaipe, an opposition lawmaker from the country’s central coast, said the body would continue to do its work, even if its laws would now be ignored when it produced legislation. “This is demonstrating before the world the authoritarianism here,” she said. “The people chose us through a popular vote.”

The ruling was also a challenge to Venezuela’s neighbors, which met in Washington this week to put pressure on the country to hold elections, and to discuss a possible expulsion of Venezuela from the O.A.S. on the grounds that the country is not democratic.

Last week, the United States, Canada and a dozen of Latin America’s largest nations called for Mr. Maduro to recognize the National Assembly’s powers, a rare joint statement that reflected deep impatience with his government.

“We consider it a serious setback for democracy in Venezuela,” the United States State Department said on Thursday of the court decision. Peru withdrew its ambassador in protest.

David Smilde, an analyst from the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights advocacy group, said it might now be up to Venezuela’s neighbors to encourage the country to hold elections again, given resistance from within the government. “The Maduro government seems to have no intention of respecting the basic elements of electoral democracy,” he said.

Critics say a long litany of other moves by the government are taking a toll on Venezuela’s democracy. Perhaps most visible to Venezuelans was an effort last year to hold a recall referendum against the president, whose popularity is sinking along with the country’s collapsing economy.

While such a referendum was permitted by the country’s Constitution, and highly favored in polls, Mr. Maduro alternatively called the effort illegal or a coup staged by his opponents. In October, a lower court suspended the process on the grounds that there had been irregularities in the gathering of signatures.

Meanwhile, political prisoners continued to be arrested. In January, Mr. Maduro established a new “anti-coup commando” to round up political dissidents accused of treason. The group has taken aim at members of the opposition, arresting many, including a city councilman from central Venezuela and a deputy lawmaker in the National Assembly.

Defense Sec. James Mattis: North Korea ‘Has Got to Be Stopped’

LONDON — After years of North Korea thumbing its nose at the international community, on Friday Defense Secretary James Mattis appeared to signal enough was enough.

"Right now, [North Korea] appears to be going in a very reckless manner … and that has got to be stopped," Mattis said at a press conference in London.

He didn't give any details about how the administration of President Donald Trump plans to deal with the reclusive nation, which, under Kim Jong Un, has drastically increased its missile and nuclear-testing program.

But Mattis' remarks continue a recent trend of Trump officials taking a harder line on North Korea.

Earlier this month, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the "diplomatic … efforts of the past 20 years to bring North Korea to a point of de-nuclearization have failed."

He also said that military action was "on the table."

Many experts say that Trump's options are limited, however.

Kim has pledged to develop a weapons capable of striking the U.S. and its allies. Three of the country's nuclear tests were completed under his rule and he conducted more missile tests over the past four years than in the rest of the country's history.

Trump could try to levy more sanctions on the country, although these have not stopped previous tests and Tillerson appeared to dismiss this approach earlier this month.

But a full-scale invasion would be unlikely — not to mention extremely difficult — according to U.S. Army strategist Maj. ML Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh wrote an article in the Modern War Institute at West Point, which is a research center of the United States Military Academy, warning of North Korea's tough, "Afghanistan-like geography" and an army that could act like "a much better-trained, much better-armed version of the Taliban."

An American invasion would also carry the risk of a retaliatory missile strike against America's allies, South Korea and Japan. The South Korean capital of Seoul, with its population of 10 million, is just 50 miles from its border with the North.

Rolling Stone Blasts Duck Dynasty, Calls Them "Hypocritical Hillbillies"------------------------------------------------------------

Duck Dynasty was a modern-day version of Mayberry - a television show that celebrated faith and family and ducks.
It was back in 2012 that A&E introduced the nation to the owners of Duck Commander – the Robertson Family, of West Monroe, Louisiana.

It was only a matter of time before Phil and Miss Kay and Uncle Si and Willie became some of the most popular stars in reality television show history. Among all of us gun-toting, Bible-clinging, Deplorables – the Robertson’s were beloved.

Each week they welcomed us into their homes and business for heaping helpings of fried frog legs, jugs of sweet tea and a healthy dose of homespun humor.
The Robertson’s never shied away from their devout Christian beliefs – and I deeply respected that decision.

One of the most poignant moments in each episode happened around the dinner table as the family held hands and prayed.

That beautiful moment of Christian fellowship was once considered controversial by A&E staffers, according to Phil.
“So they would just have me saying, ‘Thank you Lord for the food, thank you for loving us, amen,” he told Sports Spectrum in 2013

“So I said, ‘Why would you cut out ‘In Jesus’ name?’ They said, ‘Well those editors are probably doing that. They just think that they don’t want to offend some of the Muslims or something.’”
It’s no surprise that liberals, Hollywood and the Mainstream Media detested the gun-toting, Bible-clinging, duck callers.

Rolling Stone published a profane farewell to the television show titled, “Fowl Play: Saying Goodbye to ‘Duck Dynasty,’ TV’s Worst Show.”

“No show in television history has ever sucked quite like this one,” they wrote. “And if the TV gods are willing, no show ever will.”

Apparently the editors at Rolling Stone haven’t watched “Vanderpump Rules” or anything featuring the “Kardashians.”
Rolling Stone’s take-down was particularly brutal – calling the Robertson’s a “family of hypocritical Christian-right hillbillies.”

“The show represented the pre-Trump Christian right’s fantasy of itself – a family of hairy but God-fearing bootstrappers bowing their heads in prayer over the dinner table,” they added.

Rolling Stone went on to accuse them of being phonies: “Hell, even their beards looked fake.”

Now, that right there is fighting words as we say back home in the South.
In truth, the Robertson’s are good people, Christian people who spoke truth to a very intolerant culture.
I had the pleasure and honor of getting to meet Phil and Miss Kay and Al and Willie and Jase on a number of occasions. And they were just as genuine in person as they were on the television show.

Just a few weeks ago I spoke at Liberty University and had the chance to visit with Luke Robertson, the young and beardless member of the family. It only took a few minutes to understand this young man was raised by godly parents.

And that’s why we loved “Duck Dynasty” – they made television family-friendly again. That’s a fact, Jack (as Uncle Si might say).

So I believe it is only fitting to end this column the way the Robertson’s ended their television program – with a prayer.

Lord, we thank you for the Robertson family of West Monroe. We thank you for their faithfulness and their Christian witness. We thank you for sustaining them through the attacks of the evil ones. And we ask your blessings on the entire family as they begin a new journey. May they be happy, happy, happy. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Dying Well

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (I Corinthians 15: 55 NLT)

My Mother went to be with the Lord this month at the age of 101. She had a great run. One thing that I have learned from my Mom’s life is that if you live well, you will die well.

My Mom was a war baby, not World War II, but the First World War. She saw over ten decades of change in this nation. She took me to Sunday school where I first learned about God, of which I will be eternally grateful. My Mom never had a great deal of money. She left her sons little if any monetary wealth. 

She did leave us something that is more valuable that silver or gold, a godly heritage. My Mom was not perfect, none of us are. She had struggles in her life, but even in those difficulties, her life pointed us toward God. She had some fears in this life, but death was not one of them. In all her one hundred and one years of life I never heard her express a fear of dying. 

My Mom lived in the victory expressed in our scripture verse. She had made her peace with God through the death on the Cross of God’s only son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, she died in victory.

As I said in the eulogy, she fought the good fight, she finished the race, and she kept the faith. I believe that she has received her crown of glory. Therefore, I have that great hope that I will see her again. By the grace of God my Mom lived well, and by the mercy of God, she died well.
