Wednesday, November 1, 2023 Move in the Right Direction LISTEN   “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” —Acts 20:24  Corrie ten Boom said, “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration but its donation.” It’s important to think about what kind of donation our lives are making. In Acts 20, the apostle Paul identified what the measure of a person ought to be and the qualities we should see in the life of a leader. In a way, every Christian is a leader. We may be leading our children. Or, we may be examples to younger believers. But we need to take to heart what Paul says. This was an emotional moment for the apostle. He was giving his final words to the leaders of the church of Ephesus. Paul had spent time ministering to them, helping them, praying for them, and caring for them. But he was going away. In effect Paul was saying, “This is what I want you to remember. These are things that should describe your walk with God.” He told them, “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God” (verse 24 NLT). The New King James Version puts it this way: “But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Paul compared himself to a runner in a race. Using the same analogy in 1 Corinthians, he said, “Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!” (9:24 NLT). We can get off track in the race of life. That’s why it’s important to focus on our own race and not on the race others are running. It’s also important for us to understand that our times are in God’s hands. Our lives are a gift to us from God. God decides when they begin. And God decides when they end. Paul wasn’t saying that life wasn’t important, because he wrote to the believers in Philippi, “For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better” (Philippians 1:21 NLT). Paul was simply saying that he knew his life was a gift from God. In his book Nearing Home, Billy Graham wrote, “I often wonder if God, in His sovereignty, allows the eyesight of the aged to cast a dim view of the here and now so that we may focus our spiritual eyes on the ever after.”[1] As we see the frailty of life, especially when we’ve lost a loved one, eternity becomes more tangible and important to us. The length of our lives is determined by God, not by us. So, we want to make sure that we’re moving in the right direction now. The evening of our life is determined by the morning of it. DAILY DEVOTIONAL – November 1, 2023 Standing on Dry Ground By David Wilkerson

God insists there must be “dry ground” on our way through the Red Sea. He told Israel, “[You] shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea” (Exodus 14:16, NKJV). Amazingly, God uses this phrase four times, telling his people, “You will go over on dry ground.” We see this phrase again when Israel was poised to enter Canaan. They crossed over Jordan on dry ground on their way into the Promised Land. Simply put, dry ground is a path. If you are on it, you are going somewhere. You are not losing ground or going backward; your dry ground is the Lord’s plan, his work in your life, his miracles to perform. You are moving toward a revelation, a new victory in Christ, toward something greater. Scripture proves this. Note where Pharaoh and his army lost their battle: on God-given dry ground that was suddenly flooded by the sea. Dry ground is the exact place where the devil will come after you. He wants to attack you when you are at your weakest, yet it is on this same dry ground that the Lord removes the “chariot wheels” from Satan’s principalities and powers.  “The waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained” (Exodus 14:28). God is telling us, in essence, “I want you to learn to move on in faith, not according to a vision or a voice, but when you are in the midst of a dry spell. I want you to be confident that when you cannot hear my voice or see ahead, when you are on dry ground, I am leading you somewhere.” The Lord promises that he will turn our dry ground into springs of fresh water. “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongues fail for thirst, I, the Lord, will hear them…. I will open rivers in desolate places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water” (Isaiah 41:17-18). Dear saint, are you dry? God is telling you, “Soon you will see a harvest. Where there once was dry ground, life will spring up at your feet. I have created it! The Fellowship of the Saints

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

— Acts 2:42

“It is not good that man should be alone.” God knows this; He said it. God also knows that few things surpass being in a group of people with whom one really belongs. He knows we need that kind of relationship, and so He created it. 

On Pentecost Sunday two thousand years ago, He created a new kind of fellowship that had never existed in the world before. Scripture calls it “Koinonia,” the “family of God” or the “forever family.” 

The family of God includes all those who have invited Christ to make them new creatures and have experienced the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit. Everyone in the family bears the same name, Christian, and has the same Father in Heaven. This makes us all brothers and sisters in Christ. What a comforting reality to belong to such a group.

As members of God’s family, the Holy Spirit has bonded us together in many ways. Let’s think of some. We are equal heirs, and our inheritance is infinite and inexhaustible. We are believers; our hearts and minds share the same spiritual perception of the world. 

We are disciples; we all sit at the feet of one Master and learn our worldview from Him. We are witnesses; we share the special joy of leading people to Christ. We are soldiers; we share trials and triumphs and strengthen each other in faith. 

We are also a fellowship of slaves. Have you ever thought of that? During Roman times, a bond slave’s life and death were in his or her master’s hands. Paul delighted to call himself a bond slave of Christ, and we should view ourselves in the same light.

Do you realize how blessed you are to belong to such a wonderful family? Do you want God’s family to grow closer, stronger, and more loving? Today ask God to show you how to play your part in the family.

MY BODY, MY CHOICE - REALLY?

 

Hi Friend,   One of the most common arguments used to defend abortion - the killing of preborn children - is that it is “a woman’s body” so it is “her choice.”    How can any politician or judge “force a woman to do something with her body she doesn’t want to do?”   As someone who cares about women also, you might be struggling to find a compelling answer to that argument. As our nation wrestles with the legacy of Roe v.
