Expert: Discovery reveals 'redundant' components actually highly specialized

A new peer-reviewed scientific study challenges a common argument for the Darwinian theory of evolution by showing that so-called “redundant” units in the human genome actually have highly specialized functions

Casey Luskin, an attorney with graduate degrees in both science and law, explained in a report published at Evolution News and Views that evolutionists have generally assumed that synonymous codons – a sequence of three consecutive nucleotides that is part of the genetic code – are functionally equivalent. A nucleotide is the basic building block of nucleic acids.

Luskin is research coordinator for the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle, the leading proponent of the theory of intelligent design.

He explained many scientists assume the codons merely encode the same amino acid.

“Well, think again. The theory of intelligent design predicts that living organisms will be rich in information, and thus it encourages us to seek out new sources of functionally important information in the genome,” he writes.

Luskin said the new paper “fulfills an ID prediction by finding that synonymous codons can lead to different rates of translation that can ultimately impact protein folding and function.”

The study, published by the journal Frontiers in Genetics, was conducted by David D’Onofrio and David Abel.

Luskin points out scientists understand the codons GGU, GGC, GGA and GGG “all encode the amino acid glycine.”

But the new research suggests they don’t all do it identically.

“This means that DNA contains multiple languages or encoded commands occupying the same string of contiguous bases,” he writes. “On the one hand, a string of nucleotide bases encodes amino acids. On the other hand, that same string contains information about the rate at which the ribosome should translate the protein so that it can properly fold into the right shape.”

But there’s more, the research paper reveals.

Get ready for a good read about the ideas science promotes about the world and humanity, in “Evolution: A Fairy Tale for Grownups.”

“The paper calls this ‘translational pausing.’ The ribosome is capable of reading both sets of commands – as they put it, ‘[t]he ribosome can be thought of as an autonomous functional processor of data that it sees at its input.’ To put it another way, the genetic code is ‘multidimensional,’ a code within a code,” he says.

“This multidimensional nature exceeds the complexity of computer codes generated by humans, which lack the kind of redundancy of the genetic code.”

The research found that while codons that process the same amino have been thought to be overlapping, there is evidence the actual processing purposely is slowed or speeded up inside the ribosome.

According to the study: “Redundancy of the codon to amino acid mapping, therefore, is anything but superfluous or degenerate. Redundancy programming allows for simultaneous dual prescriptions of [Translational Pausing] and amino acid assignments without cross-talk. This allows both functions to be coincident and realizable.”

Luskins picked up the explanation.

“They write that the ribosome’s ability to undergo translational pausing ‘reveal[s] the ribosome, among other things, to be not only a machine, but an independent computer-mediated manufacturing system.’ The paper even suggests, ‘Cause-and-effect physical determinism…cannot account for the programming of sequence-dependent biofunction.’”

He explains that intelligent design expects to find “new layers of information in the genome,” and the paper “implicitly challenges some common evolutionary assumptions.”

“The notion that shared synonymous codons are functionally irrelevant has been used to buttress arguments for Darwinian evolution,” he says. “For one thing, some evolutionists claim that phylogenetic signals can be carried by the distribution of synonymous codons since they’re functionally equivalent. This paper suggests otherwise.”

He reasons that if codons that process the same amino “have important functional meaning, then … hundreds of studies that used these methods to infer ‘selection’ during the supposed ‘evolution of genes’ could be wrong.”

“In short, ‘redundant’ codons are not necessarily redundant at all. As the paper puts it: ‘we show why the term “degeneracy” is completely inappropriate. The dual coding functionality of redundancy is anything but ‘degenerate.’ It represents, instead, far more sophistication, layers, and dimensions of formal prescription.’”

Luskin says the researchers’ “conclusion about the high-information capacity of the genetic code is striking: Redundancy in the primary genetic code allows for additional independent codes.”

“Coupled with the appropriate interpreters and algorithmic processors, multiple dimensions of meaning, and function can be instantiated into the same codon string,” he writes

Luskin notes that William Dembski, in his intelligent design book “No Free Lunch,” says intelligent design “offers one obvious prediction, namely, that nature should be chock-full of specified complexity and therefore should contain numerous pointers to design.”

“This prediction is increasingly being confirmed,” Luskin says.

He says multidimensional codes and new levels of specified complexity “are exactly what [intelligent design] predicts, and they’re exactly what this paper is reporting.”

“It’s this sort of sophisticated, information-rich control that is expected by intelligent design, in contrast to Darwinian biology, which fails to anticipate it.”

Luskin earned an M.S. in Earth Sciences from the University of California-San Diego, where he studied the theory of evolution. He has lectured on intelligent design on university campuses and at conferences across the country.

Directive confirms readiness to send soldiers in case of 'civil disturbance'

The author of a new book that warns of increasing signs of tyranny, says it’s bad enough that the federal government is building up weaponry, ammunition and SWAT teams, it also has a plan to deploy soldiers in the case of a major flu outbreak.

The flu?

That’s right, reported Cheryl Chumley, the author of the new “Police State USA: How Orwell’s Nightmare is Becoming Our Reality.”

She pointed to a page posted online by the Defense Department that outlines the federal government’s options in case of a flu outbreak.

“Military assistance for civil disturbances” is among the “tasks” the Defense Department would perform “in a pandemic influenza outbreak within the U.S.”

Other tasks include “quarantine assistant to civil authorities,” “mortuary affairs,” “continuity of operations/government,” “protect defense critical infrastructure,” “biosurveillance, disease detection, and information sharing,” and “medical intelligence.”

“The idea of our nation’s fighting forces coming into our communities and kicking off biosurveillance missions, dressed in full battle gear, is something right out of a science fiction drama,” said Chumley.

“It’s bad enough we learn that a 2010 Pentagon memo allows the president to dispatch unarmed drones over American skies and order soldiers to dispel civil uprisings, under certain circumstances. But unleashing the military for a flu epidemic?”

Chumley quipped that “one take-away is that we should all get our flu shots.”

“Another take-away: it’s time we brought our federal government back under control,” she said. “We have at our disposal a National Guard system that allows the governor of each state to activate these local fighting forces if needed. But this program allows the president or secretary of defense to even federalize the National Guard forces – and take control.”

Chumley acknowledged that nothing may ever come of the program, but “having this power at the president’s disposal at all seems a red flag, especially as we move as a nation more and more down the path toward a police state and farther and farther away from our constitutional republic.”

“Police State USA: How Orwell’s Nightmare is Becoming Our Reality,” marshals the terrifying evidence to show the world of Big Brother is much closer than we want to admit.

WND recently reported on the 2010 Pentagon directive, signed by then-Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn, that contains standard provisions regarding support to civilian emergency services, special events and domestic use of the Army Corps of Engineers. It also outlines presidential authority for use of military weapons and personnel against Americans during times of domestic unrest.

“This appears to be the latest step in the administration’s decision to use force within the United States against its citizens,” a defense official opposed to the directive said recently.

Directive No. 3025.18, “Defense Support of Civil Authorities,” issued Dec. 29, 2010, provides “emergency authority” to U.S. commanders.

“Federal military forces shall not be used to quell civil disturbances unless specifically authorized by the president in accordance with applicable law or permitted under emergency authority,” the directive states.

“Federal action, including the use of federal military forces, is authorized when necessary to protect the federal property or functions.

“In these circumstances, those federal military commanders have the authority, in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the president is impossible and duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation, to engage temporarily in activities that are necessary to quell large-scale, unexpected civil disturbances” under two conditions.

• Military support required “to prevent significant loss of life or wanton destruction of property and are necessary to restore governmental function and public order.”

• When federal, state and local authorities “are unable or decline to provide adequate protection for federal property or federal governmental functions.”

Under a Frequently Asked Questions page on the DoD website, the federal government explains that in an influenza pandemic, it would jump into action.

“DoD is developing plans to utilize its medical surveillance and laboratory testing facilities abroad to provide early warning and tracking of a pandemic influenza. Potentially, the military could provide transportation of essential resources with its air and ground transportation assets. National Guard units and members – to whom the Posse Comitatus Act does not apply when in state active duty or Title 32 status – could provide security for the protection and distribution of pharmaceuticals. Another potential support role for DoD could be the provision of surge medical capability such as health and medical care providers.”

The website lists the tasks, including the help for “civil disturbances.”

“Additionally, the five geographic combatant commanders (U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Pacific Command, U.S. Central Command, and U.S. European Command) are developing more detailed plans to protect DoD personnel, ensure mission continuity, support local or host-nation authorities, and interagency partners. These commanders are synchronizing their plans at the regional level with our international partners, as well as with other federal, state and local authorities,” the page states.

The policy, which has been in place for years, allows the military to be activated for natural disasters as well. Troops were activated during Hurricane Katrina, for example. In 2003, DoD acted on 75 requests for help from 20 different civilian agencies; in 2004, it was 99 requests.

Chumley’s “Police State USA: How Orwell’s Nightmare is Becoming Our Reality” has received high praise from Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas.

In the foreword to Chumley’s book, Gohmert writes:

Those Democrats are hoping that the governmental god in whom they trust will be more trustworthy in controlling our lives than it is in controlling and operating a website,” he said.

The coming signs of tyranny are all around us. Fortunately, they can be stopped before it is too late, but not without a courageous effort. This nation’s founders risked absolutely everything to secure the blessings of freedom. We only risk some belittling by the mainstream and government harassment for preserving those freedoms. Bottom line, the data in Chumley’s book concerns me and it should concern you.

The book describes the case of a former Marine living in Virginia.

It was August 2012, and he “was taken into custody, thrown in jail, and forcibly transferred to a hospital located nearly three hours from his home and family to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, all at the order of law enforcement officials.”

“His crime? He posted on his private Facebook page messages that painted the government in a poor light.”

Then there was the July 2013 case of a University of Virginia student. She was “swarmed by state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents who thought the carton of bottled water she was carrying across the parking lot of a grocery store was really a 12-pack of beer and she was an underage buyer.”

“She said one drew her gun, another jumped on the hood of her SUV, and still others shouted conflicting orders and flashed badges she couldn’t read. Terrified, she tried to flee in her SUV, but agents halted and arrested her, charging her with two counts of assault.

“Even the commonwealth’s attorney who investigated the incident found the case ridiculous and refused to prosecute. But the 20-year-old still spent a night in jail – for the crime of purchasing water.”

OBAMA QUIETLY EXPANDS GOVERNMENT'S 'WATCHLIST'

You don't have to be terror suspect to be chosen

The Obama administration has quietly rewritten the rules on how it goes about designating Americans as terrorists, according to a new report by Glenn Greenwald’s Intercept online investigations project.

The report details how Obama has expanded the terrorist watchlist system, “authorizing a secret process that requires neither ‘concrete facts’ nor ‘irrefutable evidence’ to designate an American or foreigner as a terrorist,” according to a key government document obtained by the Intercept.

Instead of actual evidence, all the government needs is the nebulous “reasonable suspicion,” which is considered one of the lowest standards of proof in the American legal system. It’s less than “probable cause,” which is required to make an arrest.

Greenwald, a former investigative reporter for the U.K.-based Guardian who broke the Edward Snowden story about NSA spying on Americans, left the newspaper late last year to start the Intercept.

A 166-page document obtained by Intercept titled “March 2013 Watchlisting Guidance” was issued last year by the National Counterterrorism Center. It identifies for the first time the government’s secret rules for placing people on its main terrorist database, as well as the no-fly list and the selectee list, which triggers enhanced screening at airports and border crossings.

The federal government shares its watchlist data with local law enforcement, foreign governments and “private entities,” Intercept reported.

WND reported in 2011 that the Department of Homeland Security issued a new public service announcement encouraging Americans to look at their neighbors with a wary eye and report them to authorities if they see any suspicious behaviors.

The DHS suggests a typical woman terrorist would be a Caucasian in her late 20s or early 30s, with brunette hair, stylish clothing, high heels and a shoulder bag. A man? About the same age, short hair, wearing a shirt and slacks and familiar with technology, as he’s wearing an earpiece cellphone. Also Caucasian. This despite the fact that nearly every major act of terrorism in the United States has been carried out by non-Christians from the Middle East or North Africa.

“If you see something silly, say something: Homeland Security video portrays all ‘terrorists’ as white, middle class males,” said a headline on the counter-terrorist website Jihad Watch recently.

But the new rules, exposed by the Intercept report, allow people to be designated as representatives of terror organizations “without any evidence they are actually connected to such organizations.”  At the same time giving a single White House official the unilateral authority to place entire “categories” of people the government is tracking onto the no-fly and selectee lists.

The report also broadens the authority of government officials to “nominate” people to the watchlists based on what is vaguely described as “fragmentary information.”

Both the Obama administration, and the Bush administration before it, have resisted disclosing the criteria for placing names into the databases, even though the guidelines are unclassified.

In May, Attorney General Eric Holder even invoked the state secrets privilege to prevent watchlisting guidelines from being disclosed in litigation launched by an American who was put on the no-fly list. In an affidavit, Intercept reports that Holder called them a “clear roadmap” to the government’s terrorist-tracking apparatus, adding: “The Watchlisting Guidance, although unclassified, contains national security information that, if disclosed … could cause significant harm to national security.”

The document’s definition of “terrorist” activity includes actions that fall far short of bombing or hijacking. The guidelines include destruction of government property and damaging computers used by financial institutions as activities meriting placement on a list. They also define as terrorism any act that is considered “dangerous” to property and intended to influence government policy through intimidation. Whether such a broad definition could include, for example, a person taking a picture of a government building, is unclear.

Increasing the scope of what the government considers a “terrorist” can also be counterproductive, as the Intercept report pointed out.

“When resources are devoted to tracking people who are not genuine risks to national security, the actual threats get fewer resources—and might go unnoticed,” the report stated.

“If reasonable suspicion is the only standard you need to label somebody, then it’s a slippery slope we’re sliding down here, because then you can label anybody anything,” David Gomez, a former senior FBI special agent with experience running high-profile terrorism investigations, told Intercept. “Because you appear on a telephone list of somebody doesn’t make you a terrorist. That’s the kind of information that gets put in there.”

The consequences for people who end up on the U.S. government watchlist can be severe.

“Once the government secretly labels you a terrorist or terrorist suspect, other institutions tend to treat you as one,” Intercept reports. “It can become difficult to get a job (or simply to stay out of jail). It can become burdensome — or impossible — to travel. And routine encounters with law enforcement can turn into ordeals.”
