KINCHLOW: AMERICA IS ON BRINK OF LIFE OR DEATH DECISION

Exclusive: Ben Kinchlow warns of consequences for those who vote in blind faith

There was much talk about the evangelical and minority voters vis-a-vis the South Carolina primary. Accounting for almost 30 percent of the 4.7 million population of South Carolina, black voters were a major focus of the campaigners.

I once wrote a book called “Black Yellow Dogs.” I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “yellow-dog Democrat.” Some may not be sure exactly what that phrase means, as I was not the first time I heard it. Here’s a brief definition, and the origin, of the phrase:

In the 1928 presidential election, senior Sen. Tom Heflin, D-Ala., decided he would not support New York Gov. Al Smith, the Democrat candidate for president. He chose instead the Republican, Herbert Hoover. Hardline rank-and-file Southern Democrats were outraged. Despite the fact that this was Alabama and they were deep-South Protestants – while Smith was a Catholic, and a Yankee to boot – dogged party loyalists were determined to support Smith. When asked why, the leader of the hardliners replied, “I would vote for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democrat ticket.” The press popularized the phrase and, subsequently, “yellow dog Democrat” became part of the American political lexicon.

In other words, a yellow dog Democrat is someone who traditionally votes Democrat, no matter the issue or the candidate. As a black American who consistently voted Democrat (when I did vote), I easily qualified as a “black yellow dog.” Then, as I became aware of certain historical facts, I began to challenge the flawed concept of voting in blind faith for any party or candidate.

Tragically, it seems we have ignored a biblical warning that could easily be applied to many American voters today: “Beware… they [leaders] are blind guides, and if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit.”

After researching the matter, I found myself in agreement with this quote by Justice Clarence Thomas: “I have come… to assert my right to think for myself, refuse to have my ideas assigned to me, as though I were an intellectual slave.” Unfortunately, Thomas’ quote does not seem to hold true for many Americans today, especially black Americans.

The tragedy is, both of the candidates representing the Democratic Party in this 2016 election cycle are committed to principles that are antithetical to the policies that made America great. Both candidates are supporters of policies that, in effect, tell voters, “It is the government, not you, who is responsible for your well-being.” The implications of this worldview are frightening, to say the least.

Bernie Sanders, who in certain areas is leading Hillary Clinton, is a publicly declared socialist. He openly decries individual responsibility and declares that it is the government’s responsibility to provide for a portion of the citizenry. Simply stated, his policy would be to take from the haves and give it to the have-nots. Not because the have-nots do not have access to the avenues of have, but why should they strive when it is to be provided for them with no effort on their part?

It has also become almost impossible to differentiate between the promises of the Republicans and Democrats (and now the socialists in the mix) in today’s political landscape. Even in this unfortunate truth, many Americans have and still do engage in a deadly game of “follow the leader.” It’s deadly because this coming presidential election could be a life or death decision for America. Our republic requires a president who will carry out the will of an informed electorate voting intelligently regarding their future.

Will minorities and hyphenated Americans (African and Hispanic) vote principle or party?

These are incredibly dangerous times. The complexities of America’s challenges demand that we not blindly follow the soaring rhetoric of candidates who are not true lovers of liberty but lovers of control and dominion of We the People.

We have a responsibility to God, our fellow man and to ourselves to learn the facts, know the truth behind each candidate’s worldview and be prepared to vote for principle and not party. Anything less will seal our fate – and the fate of those to follow.

Joseph Warren, a founder, said in 1775: “On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important question on which rests the happiness and liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves.”
