THE SURPASSING WORTH OF KNOWING CHRIST JESUS

Robert Schaetzle

“Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ.”
Philippians 3:8 RSV

Purposing to really know our Savior, the apostles spent three and a half years by his side.
Even then, it wasn’t until after Pentecost they fully grasped ‘The Great Commission’ Jesus was preparing them for — not until the Holy Spirit came upon them as we recognize from Acts chapter two.

Asking the question of my title was intended for each one of us to consider
(1) how well do we know the Creator of the world, and
(2) do we truly listen to the voice of His presence when the Spirit is wanting our attention from all the distractions going on around us?
The urgency of situations in our lives can be Satan’s way to confuse or distract us from the power of God’s presence in us.
Recognizing the ‘voice of His Spirit’ takes practice.

How many times have we had someone ask, “Are you a Mary or a Martha?” —reminding us how Jesus corrected Martha by pointing out how Mary sought to listen and be in His presence.

“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.’”
Luke 10:41-42

It really is an everlasting blessing to recognize the surpassing worth, the voice of our Lord’s presence by way of His Holy Spirit within us.
It can shut out all the things going on around us, as we discern the truly important over, the distractions of this ever-changing world.

Father, help us to hear and recognize the Voice of Your Spirit as our Surpassing Worth in your eyes. AMEN
