Only Love Fulfills the Commandments

Michael Edwards

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:8 BSB

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Gal 5:14 BSB

The Word (Jesus) is crystal clear, only love can fulfill the law.
This is exactly what we see in Jesus’ life and sacrifice for us.
Jesus did not live by the letter of the law, which can only tell us what not to do.
He had a much higher calling and so do we.
He lived by the Spirit of the law, which is love.
Steadfast love is clearly exemplified in His life and His commands for all to see.
Love finished the work by hanging on the cross for us.
His love is what draws us to Him and home to the Father.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:18-19 NAS

The Word (Jesus) is clear, the one and only thing that can fulfill the law is Love.
God is LOVE.

Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love, for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Rom 13:8-10 BSB
