Happy Flag Day from Thomas More Society! Today, we celebrate the day our beloved Red, White, and Blue was adopted as a symbol of the nation and the strong foundation that it was built on.

The American flag brings us all together in unity under one banner. It represents not only our great nation and the sacrifices of those who gave birth to it, but also our God-given rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of authentic happiness. These gifts from God to every person are at the core of our American promise.

Flags have deep meanings, and ours is a symbol of freedom. These meanings matter and pull on the strings of our individual consciences. Generations of Americans have sacrificed for the flag and for the promises and ideals that it represents, ever since it was first raised up.

So, in a nation like ours, with many creeds, backgrounds, and political persuasions, we should all be able to proudly come together under our flag, with hope and love for the future of our country.

Each day, here at Thomas More Society, we strive to secure and protect the God-given rights represented by our great flag—especially our priceless freedoms of speech and religious liberty.

Our client, L.A. County Lifeguard Captain Jeffrey Little, faced a dilemma when confronted with the mandate to raise a very different flag. L.A. County sought to force Capt. Little to raise the “Pride Flag” throughout June. Facing a choice between honoring God or submitting to the dictates of government bureaucrats, he refused to hoist it up.

American students, as the U.S. Supreme Court ruled amid the Second World War, cannot be forced to salute the American flag. In the landmark Supreme Court decision, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, Justice Robert Jackson wrote:

“If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.”
