An Undivided Heart

Jennifer Woodley

1 Chronicles 28:9 'My son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart.'

These are the parting words David shared with his son Solomon, before leaving this earth.
David was considered 'a man after God's own heart' but well would he have remembered, as he spoke his final words to Solomon, his own divided heart when he sinned against God and Bathsheba.

What does it mean to have a divided heart?
It means, as we learnt through David's experience, to keep parts of our life separate from God, rather than devoting all of ourselves and all the matters of our life to Him.
It means that we live our lives in compromise, whereby we take control of portions of our life, choosing to be the lord rather than offering fully those portions to our LORD.
We look beyond God and to ourselves to satisfy our own hearts.

A divided heart robs us of the peace, fruitfulness and the true happiness that a life fully devoted to God brings.
A divided heart leads to idolatry and in time, we will fail to reflect the goodness and glory of God.
We each have a choice. We can ignore our divided hearts that keep our affections tottering between God and other things, or we can let go, repent and trust God and all of His promises.
Jesus, our merciful Savior, is ready and willing in His great love for us, to forgive us of our divided hearts when we approach Him in humble repentance.

We were made for greater things than the pleasures of this world, so let's approach Him wholeheartedly with an undivided heart.
