The Left Destroyed Everything, and Now They Want A Free Pass

 “Let’s Declare A Pandemic Amnesty,” says The Atlantic. That’s right: the people who will hound and destroy you and make you forever unemployable for some offhand remark you made on social media fifteen years ago want you to forgive and forget that they destroyed the economy, retarded the development of millions of schoolchildren, enabled the further massive intrusion of an increasingly authoritarian federal government into our lives, and coated the society with a lingering cloud of paranoia and fear, and now that we know that it was all for nothing, they want to make sure that they don’t suffer any professional consequences. Well, the answer is clear: no. All the people responsible for the COVID hysteria should be removed from any positions of power and influence, so that it is absolutely clear: this must not, and will not, happen again.

No one is going to suffer any consequences, however. They want a COVID amnesty, and they’ll get one, because their friends and allies control all the positions from which they would be held accountable. Instead, they’ll be lauded and promoted, and be ready to do it to us again in a few years, or sooner. But nevertheless, the brand of Leftist “experts” has been irretrievably tarnished, and never again will they enjoy the trust they enjoyed when they first started all this in early 2020. Next time, it’ll just be pure, naked authoritarianism.

The thrust of The Atlantic’s plea is that they didn’t know that what they did to us was completely unnecessary:

In April 2020, with nothing else to do, my family took an enormous number of hikes. We all wore cloth masks that I had made myself. We had a family hand signal, which the person in the front would use if someone was approaching on the trail and we needed to put on our masks.  Once, when another child got too close to my then-4-year-old son on a bridge, he yelled at her “SOCIAL DISTANCING!”

These precautions were totally misguided. In April 2020, no one got the coronavirus from passing someone else hiking. Outdoor transmission was vanishingly rare. Our cloth masks made out of old bandanas wouldn’t have done anything, anyway. But the thing is: We didn’t know.

Yeah, you did know. Here’s an article from March 2, 2020: “The Misleading Arithmetic of COVID-19 Death Rates.” It states: “Assuming the number of people who have reportedly died from COVID-19 is reasonably accurate, then the percentage of infected people who die from the disease (the death rate) must surely have been much lower than the 2–3% estimates commonly reported.” The day after that article was published, CBS News reported that “experts say stocking up on face masks is actually misguided,” and yet they were still required everywhere. On March 12, 2020, a top medical expert in the UK warned that wearing masks could actually increase the risk of infection.

On April 3, 2020, Reuters warned that “ isolation measures are triggering more domestic violence in some areas. Prolonged school closings are preventing special needs children from receiving treatment and could presage a rise in dropouts and delinquency. Public health centers will lose funding, causing a decline in their services and the health of their communities. A surge in unemployment to 20% – a forecast now common in Western economies – could cause an additional 20,000 suicides in Europe and the United States among those out of work or entering a near-empty job market.” And on April 16, 2020: “Hundreds of thousands of children could die this year due to the global economic downturn sparked by the coronavirus pandemic and tens of millions more could fall into extreme poverty as a result of the crisis, the United Nations warned on Thursday.”

There is so much more. They knew it all. They knew that more people would die of other diseases that were going untreated because at hospitals, the focus was entirely on COVID. They knew that children were neither the primary spreaders nor the principal victims of COVID, and still they shut them up and locked them down and destroyed the lives of untold numbers.

Now they want forgiveness. Now they want us to forget all about it, even though they know they’re unassailable in their cosseted positions of power. That must signal that even more is going to come out, showing even more vividly how venal, how sinister, how frankly evil our Leftist moral superiors are. There is no bottom.
