HOW DID I MAKE IT? A PERSONAL TESTIMONY

How Did I Make It? A Personal Testimony

by Ken Ebright

“…I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NCV)

I don’t know how I got through life as a child, but somehow the Lord saw me through (even though things were pretty messed up most of the time).
There were arguments — lots of them between my mom and dad, and on top of that I was picked on and bullied at school.
The kids called me stupid because I had to repeat 5th grade.

I also remember mom getting into a lot of car accidents.
(She was an alcoholic, so that added to the problem.) And sometimes the arguments involved the neighbors too — like one hot summer night when they got angry and began to yell at mom about our dog barking.
So mom got mad and called the police.
Once I think she even got a cop to accelerate his squad car and flash his lights in front of the neighbor’s house as a show of force (sounds crazy, but that’s the way I remember it as a kid).
Another time when a nosy neighbor heard arguing going on at our place, they came over to butt in — but that only made my mom more upset.

Sadly, mom justified her drinking because she figured since Jesus turned water into wine, it was all good — but soon alcohol took over her life.
After her mother died, my mom’s life went downhill fast.
But I was too young and immature to understand she was sick and addicted.

Then my mom committed suicide when I was fourteen.
Dad became so upset he almost abandoned me.
He thought it might be better to leave me with a pastor, and he was going to.
But thankfully, a woman named Mary prayed for our family after we lost my mom to suicide — and the Lord intervened.
Mary would become my stepmom, and as a result, I would get help for my issues.
The Lord never left me and He will do the same for you.
I urge you to keep trusting him no matter what is happening in your life.
