FROM BASEBALL LEGEND TO EVANGELIST

 

Hello Friend, The first time I met baseball legend Darryl Strawberry was actually at the White House, of all places. At a dinner with the president, first lady, vice-president, and others, there was an open mic for people to say a few words if they wanted to. Darryl walked right up to that microphone and immediately started sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. Frankly, that impressed me more than all of his accomplishments as a baseball player, which are many! In fact, Darryl is a sports giant. Known as an all-around great baseball player, and especially famous for his home runs, he was a force to be reckoned with in the batter’s box. As a result of his talent at the plate, he amassed fame and fortune. But like many celebrities and stars, he learned that money, renown, women, possessions, drugs, pleasure, and career are not able to fill the spiritual emptiness that each of us feels in life. In fact, Darryl was a broken man before he even started playing baseball, and these things only made his spiritual condition worse. But at his low point, Darryl turned to Jesus, and found grace. With humility and candor, Darryl confesses, “I was a heathen, I was a liar, I was womanizer, I was a cheater, I was an alcoholic, I was a drug addict—but I was a sinner saved by grace. God’s grace is sufficient. No matter who you are, He still has grace for you. No matter how far you go down, He still has a perfect plan for you.” I love that. Darryl talks about his spiritual transformation as well as many other relevant topics—such as forgiveness, suffering, and renewing your mind—in his brand-new book, Turn Your Season Around. I think many of us are ready to turn around the current season of our lives, and it starts with God’s transforming power.
