Pope Francis in 2010: Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage is a Move ‘by the Father of Lies’

On June 22, 2010, three weeks before Argentina’s legislature approved a law legalizing same-sex marriage, then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires wrote a letter to the monasteries in his city telling them that the move to legalize same-sex marriage was a move “by the father of lies”—n.b. Satan.

Three years later—on March 13, 2013—Bergoglio was elected to the papacy and became Pope Francis.

“The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here: father, mother, and children,” Cardinal Bergoglio wrote in that 2010 letter.
