Your burning house

2019 Oregon Legislative Session was punctuated by the walk out of the Senate Republicans. The governor and all the ultra-liberal/progressive Democrats knew the conservative/Republicans would walk out of the session, denying quorum, and ending any business over the vastly overreaching cap and trade bill. The ultra-liberal/progressive Democrats completely controlled the House and Senate and they set the entire agenda for all that was heard during the Session. No Republican has one iota of influence over the agenda and had only one “card” to play in the game of “chicken” over the very destructive cap and trade bill.

The ultra-liberal/Democrat leaders of the two houses knew there were critically important bills to protect against forest fires that needed to be heard. The Governor, Speaker Kotek, and Senate President Courtney knew these funding bills and others needed to be passed to help save your house from burning down in some future fire, yet they played a game of political “gamesmanship” with the conservative/Republicans over these critically important bills. And now we see the results! 35 deaths, 500,000 evacuations (almost a 10th of the population), hundreds of thousands of acres burned (at least 1 million), thousands of homes burned to the ground (at least 1600 homes), entire small towns destroyed (Detroit, Mill City, Idana, etc), millions of acres of timber, and thousands of animals died (including spotted owls). Not caring enough to protect you from this future destruction and death, they allowed those bills to be unheard by their cavalier approach. Instead of putting them ahead of the very controversial bill, at a time when they could have passed, they put them behind those controversial bills and caused the walkout, leading to this terrible summer!

As we reflect on this great loss we can think of the importance of having the right leadership in place to protect our families. Right now, it is evident we have the wrong people in control. Are you engaged and ready to vote? Are you helping others understand the importance of voting? Would you help encourage groups like your local church to provide timely reminders about registering to vote (about 20% of the population are not registered to vote)? Many are now burned out of their homes. Those affected must reach out to their county elections office to ensure that they get a ballot. Please check out website!
