Dear Friend Your children and grandchildren are precious to you. You know them better than anyone and have their best interests at heart. So how would you feel if you found out that your child’s school was betraying your trust and undermining your authority? That your child was being taught that they can choose their own gender. And behind your back, teachers could be required to address your child by a new name and pronoun of the opposite sex without your notice or consent. In fact, all school employees were instructed to further deceive you by reverting to using your child’s normal name and pronoun when you were around. When parents in Madison, Wisconsin learned their school district had implemented this policy for children as young as kindergarten, they were shocked. Parents do not sacrifice their parental authority when they drop their kids off at school in the morning. And government officials have no business adopting a policy that encourages schools to deceive parents. That’s why with the help of ADF and the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, 14 parents filed a lawsuit against the school district. These parents drew a line. And we are committed to fighting this government overreach and protecting parental rights. Children belong to their parents—not the government Tom, it’s no secret that gender identity ideology is a controversial topic in our society. The debate about how best to address gender confusion in young people continues to rage through legislatures, news networks, and social media. But the fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children is not up for debate. So if a child is confused about gender or is dealing with gender dysphoria at school—parents have a right to know. If a child is being called a different name at school than at home—parents have a right to know. If teachers and administrators are encouraging a child to socially transition at school—parents have a right to know. That’s why the Madison Metropolitan School District’s policy of keeping secrets from parents is unconstitutional. No parent should have to worry that their child is being indoctrinated in school without their consent or knowledge. Parents know what is best for their children—not government officials. And parents should be the first to know about any issues their child is having at school—especially when it comes to the topic of gender dysphoria!
