Atlanta Cop Victim of Witch Hunt, Possible Lynching, says GOP Candidate

Garrett Rolfe, the Atlanta police officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks inside the parking lot at a Wendy’s earlier this month, is being unfairly treated in a “Democrat witch hunt” that approaches the level of a lynching, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congressional hopeful from Georgia, told the “Todd Starnes Radio Show” Monday.

The Brooks killing has stoked division in the city and across the country in the wake of unrest over George Floyd’s death in police custody in Minneapolis. 

Greene said the shooting in Atlanta is clearly different from the Floyd case. 

Brooks, who was suspected of DUI at the time, wrestled with officers and managed to strip one of his Taser, which is considered a deadly weapon in the state.

Prosecutors have insisted that Brooks posed no threat. Rolfe’s attorney has said the shooting was justified.

“I back the blue,” she said. “I support the police.”

She continued, “Garrett Rolfe’s situation is completely, completely different than what we saw in Minnesota. 

They’re going to do an investigation but he is being unfairly treated. 

This is a Democrat witch hunt. 

You can even possibly call it a lynching, because these Democrat politicians in Atlanta, you know, Mayor Keisha Bottoms, she’s working hard. 

She’d love to be the vice president pick for Joe Biden and that DA down there [Paul Howard], he’s working hard because he’s in a runoff; he’s got an ax to grind and he wants to prove to everyone that he can take down this white police officer for shooting a black man.”

She said President Obama “set us back to the Civil Rights era” because so much of the racial tension came out of his presidency.

The interview was wide-ranging and Greene was asked by Todd Starnes, the program’s host, about reports that Rolfe’s mother was fired from her job at a Georgia mortgage company shortly after her son was charged in the killing. 

The company said in a statement that the mom, Melissa Rolfe, “lost the confidence of her peers, leadership, and many employees who no longer felt comfortable engaging with her.” 

It was not immediately clear what specific action led to her termination. 

That created rumors that she was fired as a direct result of her son’s allegations.

Greene said the mother lost her job because of her son.

“The day that they had to take Garrett to be processed and put in jail is the very same day that her company [Equity Prime Mortgage] terminated her employment,” she said.

She said she did not have any specific information from the company, and only referred to its earlier statement, but said she intends to continue to “stand up for law enforcement.”
