Oregon has coronavirus and has experienced some deaths. Any loss of life is very sad and we should make efforts to limit deaths, when possible. As of April 25th, about 90 people had passed away in Oregon, and about 2,300 people have tested positive for COVID. And yet in the midst of this we have many bad repercussions.

Unemployment is at, or greater than, depression levels. When 300,000 Oregonians applied for unemployment it overran the antiquated unemployment system and people hoping for a quick $600.00 are not likely to receive that soon.

Studies show that for every 1% increase in unemployment, there is a 1% increase in suicides. Also, we are laying off many medical personel and hospitals are lacking funds, as there are no elective procedures allowed at this time. What is an elective operation? I understand inserting a stint around the heart qualifies. Are lives being endangered because they haven't received these needed "elective" operations?

So what should we do? Unemployment, probably increased drug abuse, increased suicide, debt amassing, possible inflation as a consequence of printing money, rents not able to be paid, mortgages not able to be paid, people losing their housing, unable to make car payments, loss of civil liberties, loss of religious freedoms, and the list goes on?

Aren't we in a new reality? We will have to wear masks, avoid large gatherings, practice a higher level of hygiene, work to protect those who are in higher levels of vulnerability, and pay attention all the time!

But isn't it time to get our economy back to work? Agree? Take our poll.
