Keep Calm and in Control
Jennifer Woodley
‘Then they tried to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.’ John 7:30 (NRSV)
Jesus understood what was required of Him and that was to do the work God had given Him to do at the present time.
He often told others that His time (for that particular activity) had not yet come.
We need to apply such wisdom to our own lives too.
Sufficient is this day with the concerns we have to attend to without racing ahead to tomorrow and beyond.
God has a work for each of us to do in this hour.
He has a purpose for us in this time.
The hour to do or concern ourselves with another thing has not yet come.
There will be a time for another thing, but that’s not now.
May God find us faithfully concerning ourselves with only what He asks of us in this hour.
Nothing more.
At this time it is all too easy to let our thoughts run out of control and then our behaviour automatically follows.
Catastrophic thinking can cause our minds and actions to snowball out of control.
Let’s resolve to neither let ourselves or others trouble our hearts with what lays beyond today, or even this hour.
Instead, know what thing God has for us to do and stay with just that.
Keep calm and in control – attend to this hour with God as our Guide.
‘Heavenly Father, help me to pay attention to what you are doing and saying to me right now rather than filling my mind with what may or may not lay ahead. Thank you.’
