The U.S. Constitution - Article 2, Section 4, “The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”
The roots of impeachment of public officials in Western Civilization stretch back at least to the 1300’s in British governance and jurisprudence. Since our Founders were mostly of British heritage, and were, at that time, still British subjects, the inclusion and continuation of this concept in our Constitution borrows from and maintains its “history” from British common law.
