This reminds me of the officers of the Einsatzgruppen, Hitler’s SS. The brownshirts were special elite SS mobile formations tasked with carrying out the mass murder of Jews, communist functionaries, and others deemed unfit to live by the Nazis. The Einsatzgruppen officers were carefully selected by SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Polizei as well as chief of the Reich Main Security Office Reinhard Heydrich from the best educated. They were “men of letters.” Three of the four commanders held a doctorate, whilst one was a double PhD.
