IS GENESIS HISTORY OR MYTH?

Friend, “In the beginning, God…” If you can accept those opening words of Genesis, the rest of the Bible is going to be relatively easy for you to believe. But if you doubt them, then you’re going to have a problem believing the subsequent truths presented in Scripture. Genesis is a foundational book, both to the Bible and to our faith. It lays the groundwork for so much of what we believe—not only about the creation of the world but about marriage, family, sin, redemption, and so much more. In Genesis we have a very specific account of the creation of the universe that sometimes gets watered down with alternate theories and conjectures. Sometimes Christians think this doesn’t really matter. They’ll say, “Maybe there was a big explosion and the Big Bang Theory is compatible with the Bible. Maybe evolution is true and Genesis is allegorical or just poetic literature.” No. If we’re Christians and we believe the Bible is God’s Word, then we need to believe what it says. But that’s not to say that we are to check our brains at the door either. Christians can look at the evidence of the world that surrounds us and see that what the Bible says is true, and is in harmony with scientific observation as well.
