GOD THE INITIATOR

God the Initiator
Susan Barnes

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." Revelation 3:20

I decided to read C.S. Lewis' Narnia tales, which I somehow missed reading when I was younger. They are allegories about the Christian life. At one point, Lewis has the character who represents Jesus say, "You would not have called to me unless I had been calling to you.”

It is God who takes the initiative, and we respond to him, often before we are even aware that he is seeking us. It is God who lets us hear his voice calling. He awakens our spiritual awareness so that we might seek him.

Many like, Francis Thompson who wrote the poem, The Hound of Heaven, have described how God pursued them, not to make their lives difficult, but to help them. God longs so much to have a relationship with us that he actively pursues us throughout our lives.

In Rev 3:14 we discover that these words were first addressed to the church at Laodicea.

The invitation to open the spiritual door of our heart to Christ is meant for Christians and teaches us that as we grow in our Christian lives, God is still calling us.

He calls us to deeper places of worship, deeper places of prayer, deeper places in his Word. God always has something more for us, but it is up to us to open the door to deeper fellowship with him.

Do we hear him knocking? Or is his voice drowned out by other more pressing voices? Let’s hear his voice and open the door today.
