DEMOCRATS AND THE DARK ART OF PROJECTION

David Kupelian on why leftists accuse opponents of the very evil they commit

Something head-spinningly bizarre is going on right now in our troubled nation. Consider:

• The presidential candidate who actually “colluded with the Russians” for years, including during the 2016 election, feigns innocence while her party accuses the other candidate – utterly without evidence – of selling out America to Vladimir Putin.
• The political party that is totally obsessed with race – which insists on hiring, and discriminating against, people solely on the basis of their skin color – accuses those who embrace a color-blind America of being “racists.”
• The most blatantly fascist group in America – calling itself Antifa, short for anti-fascist – attacks genuine anti-fascists while calling them “fascists.”

You get the idea. It’s called projection.

In psychology, projection is just one of many defense mechanisms people unconsciously employ to avoid facing uncomfortable feelings within themselves – by ascribing these unpleasant qualities to another person.

But in today’s political and cultural battles, projection is a tactic of all-out warfare.

The plain truth is, on issue after issue, one side in the raging war over America’s future is literally accusing the other side of the very attitudes, offenses and crimes of which it itself is guilty.

This phenomenon of political projection is almost never seriously explored, so let’s take a good look.

We’ll start with a quick 30,000-foot panoramic view of the current political and cultural battlefields, because when examined closely, many yield up audacious examples of projection – literally, one side accusing the other of the evil it commits.

The biggest, longest-playing story of our time, of course, is the allegation that Donald J. Trump somehow “colluded with Vladimir Putin and the Russians” in 2016 to steal the presidency from Hillary Clinton. 

After two years of an agonizing, ever-expanding special counsel investigation that has ripped apart the country, paralyzed Washington and, in many ways, hobbled the Trump presidency, what do we now know?

To date, no evidence of Donald Trump colluding or conspiring with Russia or Vladimir Putin to influence the election has surfaced. None. However, we know that Hillary Clinton did “collude with the Russians” to obtain dirt on Donald Trump to influence the 2016 presidential contest. 

It’s undisputed that the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, then under the candidate’s control, paid a reported $1 million to opposition-research firm Fusion GPS for the infamous and mostly fictitious “Steele dossier,” which was based largely on interviews with Russian officials, including “a senior Russian Foreign Ministry figure” and “a former top level intelligence officer still active in the Kremlin.” 

The salacious and fabricated claims about Trump were then used fraudulently by the Obama Justice Department to con a secret Washington FISA court into granting the Obama administration permission to send spies into Trump’s presidential campaign.

And all this doesn’t even begin to encompass Hillary Clinton’s earlier “collusion with the Russians” when, as secretary of state, she signed off on handing control of one-fifth of America’s strategic uranium reserves to Russia, in return for which millions of dollars flowed from Russia directly into the Clinton Foundation – 

not to mention $500,000 to husband Bill for giving a one-hour speech in Moscow (that’s about $139 per second). 

And let’s not forget President Obama being caught on a hot mic confiding to Russian President Medvedev, “This is my last election. 

After my election I have more flexibility.” (Translation: After I’m re-elected president, I can do things Putin wants, but that the American people would never approve of.) 

To which comrade Medvedev replied, “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir, and I stand with you.”

“Collusion”? The Democrats have literally accused Donald Trump of what they themselves have done.

Let’s stick with Russia for just a bit longer, because, along with alleging that Trump “colluded with Putin” to steal the election, Democrats have also – in surreal fashion – been accusing the president and Republicans in general of being “soft on Russia.” 

Surreal because, as I explained recently in “Massive Russian collusion, but not by Trump,” for the past 100 years it’s the left that has been continually “colluding with the Russians”:

For something like three generations this nation’s most vital institutions, from higher education to Hollywood, have been powerfully influenced, if not entirely dominated, by the Marxist-socialist worldview incubated, nurtured, celebrated, propagandized and exported primarily by Russia.

Today’s Democratic Party, pushed radically leftward by President Barack Obama, has become almost indistinguishable from the Communist Party USA. In case you didn’t know, the CPUSA came into existence as a U.S.-based, Moscow-controlled-and-funded communist party, but has lost most of its influence and support since the Soviet Union collapsed, thanks to President Ronald Reagan. Today, the CPUSA no longer fields its own presidential candidates, but rather, urges voters to support Democrats, having enthusiastically endorsed John Kerry, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

If you think this comparison of the Democratic Party with the Communist Party USA is hyperbolic, I suggest you just stop reading right now and pull up the CPUSA’s website at CPUSA.org. Spend some time reading and digesting it. Try to discern any major differences between the Communist Party’s concerns, sensibilities and solutions – on issues from gay rights to unfettered immigration to renewable energy to wealth redistribution to condemning cops as racist to universal health care – and those of today’s Democratic Party.

Let’s move on now and briefly survey a few other key issues:

Racism: Leftists daily accuse conservatives of being racists, bigots, white nationalists, white supremacists, Klansmen, fascists and Nazis.

In reality, the average law-abiding, patriotic American citizen literally couldn’t care less about your skin color or ethnicity. Since the 1960s, America’s vast middle class – the wellspring of this nation’s power, character and economic might – has embraced Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “dream” of a color-blind America, where people “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Likewise, regarding immigration, the middle class has long believed in the beautiful, traditional notion of the “melting pot” – people of every race, color, creed and ethnicity legally migrating to America to become Americans! Indeed, the vast majority of U.S. citizens are, like this writer, themselves from grateful immigrant stock.

Yet while leftists accuse center-right America of being racist, it is the left that is utterly obsessed with race, to the point that it insists on hiring and promoting – and excluding and discriminating against – people based solely on “the color of their skin.” This is virtually the textbook definition of racism.

Free speech and tolerance: The left preaches tolerance while branding conservatives and Christians as bigoted and intolerant, yet has itself become the most intolerant force in America today. When various conservative personalities including Ben Shapiro and Ann Coulter were engaged to speak at the University of California at Berkeley in 2017, gangs of black-clad, masked “anti-fascist” (Antifa) hoodlums engaged in violence, set fires, broke windows and vandalized nearby businesses while screaming that conservatives must be prevented from speaking because they’re “fascists” and “Nazis.” Shapiro is Jewish, always polite and wears a yarmulke. Coulter cancelled her speech due to the threat of violence at the hands of today’s fascist Blackshirts.

Islamic jihad: In dealing with the major civilizational threat posed to America by Islamic supremacism and mass-casualty jihad terror attacks, the left regards Muslims as the biggest victims – of rampant “Islamophobia” – while chastising the actual victims (the public at large) for their supposed bigotry and “Islamophobic bullying” of Muslims, which “creates a climate that pushes people into terrorism.”

Voter fraud: Every election cycle, Democrats cynically accuse Republicans of “voter suppression” simply because of their insistence that voters identify themselves to show they’re U.S. citizens and therefore legal voters. Yet, it is Democrats whose whole growth strategy relies on various forms of voter fraud and abuse, from encouraging non-citizens to vote (the obvious message conveyed by their fierce opposition to voter ID laws) to their ultimate get-out-the-vote strategy: Importing into the U.S. an entire new population of voters, not loyal to either America’s Constitution or cultural values, to support Democrats’ increasingly unconstitutional, un-American agenda. Statistically, the vast majority of recent immigrants, both legal and illegal, favor Democrats.

Science: Democrats claim to be the “party of science” and routinely scoff at conservatives and Christians as “anti-science.” Yet they’ve abandoned the most “settled science” of all, basic biology, pretending a human baby inside its mother is just a disposable, tumor-like mass of tissue right up to the moment of birth – which magically transforms into a precious human baby the second it’s born. Likewise, they champion the shockingly unscientific belief that a man, permanently encoded with male chromosomes in every cell of his body, magically becomes a woman if he simply feels he’s a woman. Worse, due to the left’s barely disguised totalitarian tendencies, it is intent on punishing all who refuse to play along with their science delusions, branding them as ignorant, hateful bigots – and possibly criminals.

Morality: The left fomented and championed the “sexual revolution,” which totally rejects the biblical moral values that guided and grounded Western Civilization for millennia, ushering in a radical new paradigm that replaces morality with consensuality. (In other words, if two adults consent to engage in an immoral act, that somehow makes it moral.)

Yet now, the party of sexual anarchy and unrestricted abortion – including late-term and sex-selective abortion – whose ideology is rooted entirely in moral relativism and the destruction of every vestige of Judeo-Christian morality, is telling President Trump he’s “immoral” for wanting to build a wall to help protect America from an ongoing invasion.

The ultimate projection

The left is so good at projection, it even projects the accusation of projection onto others!

For example, the leftwing activist Democratic Underground site informs us:

Here at DU, we often discuss the Republican tactic known as “projection.” Republicans accuse Democrats of misdeeds that they themselves commit, or they claim success for things Democrats have done. Sadly, this tactic is effective. When Democrats accuse Republicans of that which they’ve been accused of, Democrats can appear defensive and the Republican goal of obfuscation is met. Simply confusing the public is a victory for Republicans.

Uh huh.

Less demented and more interesting examples abound in news and opinion stories in left-leaning media, which frequently accuse Donald Trump of the dastardly tactic.

“It’s called projection,” confides liberal commentator Peter Beinart in his July 2017 Atlantic article “The Projection President.” According to Beinart, “Trump does it with remarkable frequency”:

You may have noticed that over the last few days, Trump and his allies have begun talking a lot about the Hillary Clinton campaign’s alleged collusion with the governments of Russia and Ukraine. On Wednesday morning, for instance, Trump tweeted a quote from the conservative Washington Times that claimed, “Democrats have willfully used Moscow disinformation to influence the presidential election against Donald Trump.”

Why is Trump suddenly interested in the Democratic Party’s ties to the Russian government? Perhaps because on Monday, The New York Times broke a blockbuster story about his campaign’s ties to the Russian government.

It’s a pattern that has repeated itself again and again since Trump launched his presidential bid.”

Beinart quickly rattles off more examples of Trump’s purported “projection”:

The following month, as journalists pressed him to state definitively that he believed President Obama was born in the United States, Trump announced that, “Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy.” In October, as numerous women came forward to accuse Trump of sexual harassment, he began accusing Clinton of abusing women.

Only one problem with Beinart’s analysis: It’s not projection when what you’re saying about others is the truth! Democrats did intentionally use Russian disinformation to hurt Trump in the 2016 election. Members of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign did spread the theory that Obama was born in Kenya and constitutionally ineligible to be president. Bill Clinton did sexually abuse women.

The secret religion of the left

So what’s going on? How can the left – which now encompasses the increasingly socialistic Democratic Party, virtually all of academia and almost the entirety of the news and entertainment media – act as they do today? How can they be so out of touch with truth, so contemptuous of traditional, Judeo-Christian morality and sensibilities, so hostile toward basic constitutional rights like freedom of speech and religion, so condemning of their own country and its citizens that they demand open borders and welcome ongoing invasion – and then be so adept at blaming others for all the evil they are enabling?

Psychologists explain that certain types of people – “narcissists,” for one – are compelled to project blame onto others simply because they are totally unwilling, and therefore unable, to take responsibility for anything going wrong in their lives.

Indeed, on the macro level, when have we ever heard Detroit’s Democratic leaders take any responsibility for their utter obliteration of that once-great city, or Chicago’s Democratic leaders accept any blame for a murder rate that exceeds the combined U.S. death toll in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, or San Francisco’s leaders ever blame themselves for that most-beautiful city’s transmogrification into a giant sewer of syringes and human feces?

Why are hardcore leftists immune to responsibility and reason? Why do they always blame others?

Let’s dig a little deeper here.

Those who are guilty of all this leftist insanity – trying to disarm law-abiding citizens, accusing thoroughly decent people of being “racists,” demanding open borders, defending late-term abortion and so on – project their guilt and blame onto others because they actually know, on some level, they are guilty. There is, after all, this thing we call conscience (“con+science,” literally, “with knowing”). Whether they acknowledge it or not, they know deep down they are guilty. Why? Because God is real, “right and wrong” are a real thing, we are spiritual-moral beings, and thus we all experience guilt when we do wrong.

But what happens when we don’t want to admit we’re wrong? What do we do with our guilt?

If we’re leftists, we transfer our guilt and blame to an innocent party and in return we appropriate their innocence. 

Stay with me here. If this sounds a little religious, that’s because like everything else with the left, we’re actually dealing with a religion – a very perverse one. 

Whereas in Christianity, through Christ’s atoning death, the repentant sinner is graced to be able to transfer his or her guilt to the innocent Son of God in return for His innocence – the greatest gift of a loving God – 

the angry left relies on its own inverted version of salvation by trading its guilt for others’ (relative) innocence. That’s what we call projection.

To understand how can this be, it helps to realize something about the leftist mindset most people just don’t quite comprehend.

“Leftists not only believe they know what is right,” explains author and talk host Dennis Prager, “but they also believe they are morally superior to all others. 

Leftists are Ubermenschen – people on such a high moral plane that they do not consider themselves bound by the normal conventions of civics and decency. Leftists don’t need such guidelines; only the non-left – the ‘deplorables’ – need them.”

The “non-left” must therefore be seen by the left as “deplorable” because, logically, one cannot feel morally superior to others unless those others are morally inferior (i.e., irredeemable, bigoted, racist, ignorant, anti-science, anti-immigrant, misogynistic, uncaring, transphobic, Islamophobic, toxically masculine or just old and white). 

But take this dynamic one step further: How much more liberating is it to the left when their opponents are not merely stupid bigots, but totally evil – fascists, Nazis, Hitler? 

Liberating because, if you really were a moral, awake person living under a Nazi regime with Hitler at the helm, you would be at war with your nation’s leader and his legions. There would be no rules, no “fair play,” and lying and deceit in every form would be virtuous – weapons of righteous combat. 

As Sun Tzu said, “War is deception.”

There are no rules when you’re battling Hitler, and that’s exactly how the left likes it – no rules.

Of course, Trump is not Hitler and the GOP is not fascist, Nazi or evil. None of this leftwing mass delusion is actually reflective of reality. As president, Donald J. Trump has embraced a remarkably sensible, center-right, pro-American, pro-growth, pro-freedom domestic and foreign policy agenda.

In truth, the left’s tactic of projection is just another aspect – albeit a fascinating and colorful one – of a craven, endlessly dishonest power play by those addicted to power. 

They are suffering severe withdrawal right now, having lost the presidency in 2016 – and in their desperation to regain power are demonstrating the morals and maturity of a heroin-addicted teenage girl who manipulates, lies to, and steals from her own loving parents in order to get the fix that will ultimately kill her.
