What Jesus Knew
Susan Barnes
"Jesus knew ... he had come from God and was returning to God." John 13:3
It was important that Jesus knew where he had come. It wasn't just that his earthly parents were Mary and Joseph, he was God's son. Likewise, we can have the assurance that we are God's children. We read in John 1:12 that we have been given the right to become the children of God. Not by our merit but because of Jesus.
Let’s embrace this right and believe that we are children of God. Children who are dearly loved (Colossians 3:12).
If we don’t accept how God sees us, we can’t live like his children. We become like the children of Israel that Isaiah wrote about: Isaiah 1:2-3,
"I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."
However, when we know we are God’s children, we understand whose we are, and can live with great confidence. Perhaps John understood this better than most as he often referred to himself as the disciple who Jesus loved. This statement isn’t exclusive to John, we can all think of ourselves as disciples who Jesus loves.
Jesus also knew where he was going. He was going to be with his heavenly Father. We too have been given the assurance of going to be with God. This shouldn’t fill us with dread but with the anticipation of spending time with someone who loves us and desires our presence.
