A PLACE OF ACCEPTANCE

A Place of Acceptance
Jennifer Woodley

‘I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learnt to be content whatever the circumstances.’ Philippians 4:11 (NIV).

Sometimes life takes a turn that is far from what we expected. God intervenes and our life journeys along an unplanned path. This new direction doesn’t suit us at all. Not one bit. So what are we going to do about that?

Paul confidently stated that he could be content whatever his circumstances. But can we? Paul knew that God’s provision for him was good, constant and dependable, regardless of the direction his life went. Can we be so certain of God? Paul moved past bitterness, anger or resistance and came to a place of acceptance. A peaceful place, free from struggle, which allowed him to rest in God’s faithfulness.

It takes us a while to reach this place of acceptance. A much longed for job offer falls through, the bank will not lend us finance for a new home or the doctor’s words indicate that the results from recent tests are not looking good. Can we be content to trust God in those times? Can we believe that when life is seemingly going wrong for us, God says that it is going good?

There is only one way to come into this place. Only as we rely on God’s promises and Christ’s power working in us can we come to a place of acceptance. Then, like Paul, we can know true contentment in every circumstance.

‘Heavenly Father, thank you that you work all things for my good. Help me to trust you in the trying times and bring me into a place of acceptance. Amen.’
