Christ Jesus prayed that all those who would believe in Him would be ONE, just as He and the Father are ONE; that they be brought to complete unity so that the world would know that He was sent by the Father. (John 17:20-23)
Pastor John Cao has been ministering in China for more than 30 years. He has been a bold ambassador for the gospel, personally leading many to Christ. One of VOM’s contacts in China said Pastor Cao often took a train from city to city instead of flying because it gave him more time to talk to people about Jesus. Despite being married to an American, Pastor Cao never applied for U.S. citizenship. He said his Chinese passport made it harder for Chinese authorities to keep him out of the country he loved.
Pastor Cao was more than an evangelist; he also trained other evangelists and house church leaders. Graduates from his many training schools are serving Jesus today in numerous countries around the world. But while they are actively serving as missionaries, their trainer, Pastor Cao, sits in a Chinese jail, sentenced to seven years in prison for an “illegal” border crossing into China. In recent years Pastor John’s heart for ministry had taken him across the border into Myanmar, where he had established 16 schools to help educate children in the impoverished Wa people group. Part of the school’s curriculum was taken directly from the Bible, and Pastor Cao recruited Christian teachers to work at the schools and share the gospel with both students and their parents.
In March 2017, Pastor Cao was arrested by Chinese officials as he crossed back into China from Myanmar. Hundreds of people cross the border between the two countries every day, bringing goods in and out and conducting cross-border business without a visa and without incident. Yet Pastor Cao was arrested, charged with “illegal border crossing,” convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison.
