GOV. SHUTDOWN POSSIBLE OVER BORDER WALL IMPASSE

 - The Washington Times - Monday, July 30, 2018
President Trump said Monday that he wouldn’t flinch from shutting down the government over border wall funding, saying the years of talk about border security have gotten nowhere.
“I would have no problem doing a shutdown,” Mr. Trump said at a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
The remark doubled down on Mr. Trump’s tweet over the weekend threatening a shutdown, which has not found support among Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.
Funding for a border wall would be a major sticking point in spending bills due by Sept. 30 to keep the government open.
“We are the laughingstock of the world. We have the worst immigration laws in the world,” Mr. Trump said.
In the tweet, Mr. Trump demanded more border security including a border wall, end of catch-and-release policies and a move to a merit-based immigration system.
Mr. Trump said he was open to negotiate on some of those points.
“We are always leave room for negotiations,” he said. “I have no red line, unlike President Obama. I just want great border security.”
