Kirk Cameron's Interview With Joni Eareckson Tada Will Move You To Tears
Oct 10, 2017 by Will Maule
Joni Eareckson Tada is an extraordinary woman.
As a teenager, she was paralyzed in a freak diving accident. But she refused to be defined by her disability and was determined to be used by God despite her physical limitations. Tada learned to paint with a brush between her teeth and became internationally recognized as a brilliant artist. She has also published over forty books.
In a new interview with Christian actor Kirk Cameron, Joni talks of her God-given drive to do something with her life after becoming paralyzed. "My occupational therapist is the one who put pencils in my teeth and said 'Well, Joni, you can't use your hands, you're gonna have to start typing with your mouth or learning to write letters on a writing tablet."
"I spit the thing out on the floor because I felt it was beneath me, it was demeaning, it was humiliating to be reduced to doing nothing more than putting pencils between my teeth," Joni explains.
"But then, there comes a time, Kirk, when you just have to get out of the corner and live. You have to break beyond your pity and start moving forward somehow."
"I finally was so tired of my pity, in bed one night I cried out 'God if I can't die' because I would wrench my head back and forth on my pillow desperately trying to break it up at some higher level and thereby kill myself.
I was not successful."
